  • Man jailed after arson threat, struggle with police officers

    A Lancaster man found himself in jail after he reacted violently when told to leave a Glennwood Avenue home.

    Bruce Edward Helms, 65, 408 Glennwood Ave., was arrested Feb. 27 and charged with attempted arson and third degree assault, according to a Lancaster Police Department incident report.

    According to the report, Helms was allowed to enter the residence by the victim to clean himself up from a personal accident. 

  • Boat buyer bilked on Craigslist

    A man who answered a Craigslist ad for a boat was scammed out of more than $4,800, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff's Office incident report.

    A woman recently told deputies that on Feb. 18, her husband saw an ad on Craigslist selling a paton boat, the report said. 

    The woman said her husband emailed the seller several times regarding the boat and was told it was part of an estate and needed to be sold so she and her family could move. 

  • Fire destroys Kershaw home

    A Kershaw home is a total loss after a fire tore through it during the early morning hours of Sunday, March 2.

    Sheriff’s deputies and members of the Flat Creek, Kershaw and Rich Hill volunteer fire departments responded at 1:16 a.m. to a house fire in the 3700 block of Meadowview Road, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report. 

  • Woman attacked in IL Walmart parking lot

    A Fort Mill woman is recovering from her injuries after a minor car accident quickly turned into a group assault inside the parking lot of Indian Land’s Walmart late Thursday, March 6.

    Deputies were called to the store parking lot, at 10048 Charlotte Highway (U.S. 521), just after 10 p.m. about a report of a car accident and an assault, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

  • ‘Most Wanted’ man jailed in Chester

    A wanted man whom local authorities have been searching for since he escaped from his own arrest in 2010, has been tracked down to a jail in a neighboring county. 

    Desmar Denzel Anderson, 23, of Great Falls, whose photo and list of charges recently ran as part of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Most Wanted list, has been tracked down to the Chester County Detention Center, said Sheriff’s Maj. Matt Shaw on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

  • Man grabs cash, dashes from store

    Deputies are tracking down leads to find a man who grabbed a handful of cash from a convenience store cash register on Thursday night, Feb. 27.

    Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Matt Shaw said the larceny happened at about 10 p.m. when a customer entered North Corner Grocery, at 3647 Charlotte Highway.

    “A guy came in and was going to buy something. When the clerk opened the cash register, he reached right in, grabbed some money and ran out the door,” Shaw said.

  • Driver faces DUI charge in Meeting Street crash

    A Lancaster man was charged with driving under the influence after he was involved in a car accident Feb. 19. 

    Charles J. Whitt, 45, 2555 Country Club Drive, received the DUI charge shortly after his car flipped along a stretch of West Meeting Street early that morning, said S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Billy Elder. 

    The accident happened at 1 a.m. as Whitt was driving a 2011 Chevrolet two-door vehicle north on West Meeting Street. Elder said the car then drove off the right side of the road, struck an embankment and flipped over. 

  • Fires destroy Ninth Street home, Henry Harris Road cabin

    Bright orange flames consumed a small Lancaster house early Tuesday morning as firefighters worked quickly to put out the blaze.

    Members of the Gooches and McDonald Green Volunteer Fire Departments, as well as Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies, responded at 12:47 a.m. to a fire at 1115 Ninth St., according to a sheriff’s office incident report. The house is in Lancaster’s Brooklyn area.
