  • Sheriff seeks help in identifying woman’s body found near county line

    The York County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying a young woman whose body was found at the county line Thursday off Doby’s Bridge Road.
    YCSO spokesman Trent Faris said workers at a water testing station found the body just before 10 a.m. in a rocky area near Sugar Creek.
    Faris said Thursday afternoon that it was still too early in what he called a “death investigation” to say if investigators suspect foul play or not.

    The York County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case of a body found at the county line Thursday off Doby’s Bridge Road.

  • 11-year-old injured in hit-and-run

    An 11-year-old boy was injured Thursday night in a hit-and-run accident just south of Lancaster, and the Highway Patrol is seeking the public’s help in locating the vehicle involved.
    The boy, whose identity has not been released, was flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after he was found lying next to the road at 8:25 p.m. His condition was unknown at press time.
    According to Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Gary Miller, the incident happened on Evans Drive, near Barnett Street off McIlwain Road.

  • Skateboarder killed during midnight ride on a highway

    A skateboarder was killed and a bicyclist seriously injured Thursday night when they were struck by a car on Lynwood Drive south of Lancaster.
    The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Lorenzo Velasco Carlos, 20, of Lancaster.
    Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Gary Miller said the accident happened about 11:55 p.m. on Lynwood Drive near Holly Hill Lane about 2 miles south of the city.

  • Sheriff seeks suspect in Indian Land theft

    Five spools of electrical wire were stolen from the RedStone construction site in Indian Land, and the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying a videotaped suspect.
    Video surveillance showed a man inside the RedStone 14 cineplex building at 9650 Charlotte Highway between 11:13 p.m. and 11:32 p. m. Tuesday. He appears to be white, between 6 foot 1 and 6 for 3, and weighs 185 to 195 pounds, according to the sheriff’s office.

  • Motel guest explains ripped up carpet – I was trying to kill rat

    A Lancaster man was arrested Monday for pulling up all the carpet from the floor of a local motel room, telling police he did it trying to kill a rat.
    Mark Ashley McCowan, 37, 940 Taylor Drive, was charged with malicious injury to property under $2,000 and giving false information to police.
    According to a Lancaster Police Department incident report, an officer was called to Super 8 Motel, 1201 S.C. 9 Bypass East, just after 10:30 p.m. Monday to see the property damage.

  • 2 men seriously hurt in unrelated shootings

    Two men were seriously injured Wednesday night in unrelated shootings in different parts of Lancaster County.
    The names of the men were not released, and no arrests had been made at press time. Both victims were airlifted for treatment of their injuries.
    The first incident happened a little after 6 p.m. in the 5000 block of Pleasant Plains Road in Kershaw, according to a statement from the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

  • Man charged with heroin trafficking, kidnapping

    A Lancaster man has been charged with heroin trafficking after his wife accused him of beating her and holding her against her will.
    In addition to the heroin charge, William James Beckham, 43, of 1665 Ruth St., is also charged with first-degree domestic violence and kidnapping.
    According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the victim said she snuck out of the house about 5 a.m. Sept. 9 and walked 3 miles for help at the home of a woman she knew, who then called deputies.

  • 6 arrested, 2 sought in undercover drug sting

    Six people are in jail and sheriff’s office investigators are looking for two more after a roundup Thursday of suspects in a six-month undercover drug operation.
    Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Doug Barfield said drug distribution warrants were prepared against the suspects for selling illegal drugs to undercover sources between February and August.

  • Civic leader charged in domestic-abuse case

    A Lancaster business owner and civic leader was arrested last week after his wife accused him of threatening her while holding a handgun, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
    Chris Tillman, 50, of 1943 Havenwood Drive, was charged with one count of first-degree domestic violence after the Aug. 30 incident.
    Tillman is the owner of C&V Cleaning Services in Lancaster and recently became president of the Lancaster Breakfast Rotary Club.
