  • Man, mom robbed at gunpoint inside home

    A Lancaster man told deputies he and his mother were robbed in their home Monday morning by two armed men who kicked in their back door, a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report said.
    James Champion, 65, of 1809 Feature Road, said he was in bed on a futon in the living room about 1:30 a.m. Monday when he heard a loud bang, but before he could stand up, two men in masks appeared over him yelling for him to give them “the money.”

  • Roving dogs attack goats, leave 7 dead, 14 more hurt

    Two dogs roaming miles from home ravaged a herd of goats owned by an elderly Kershaw couple, killing or seriously injuring nearly a dozen of the animals, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office report.
    Wayne Bartell, 75, of 6820 Hanging Rock Church Road, called 911 about 7:45 a.m. to report he’d shot and killed one of two dogs he’d caught inside the goat pen behind his home. The other dog, he said, had escaped and run off.

  • Man accused of abusing children

    A Lancaster man faces child-abuse charges for incidents involving his 7-, 12- and 15-year-old children earlier this year.
    Randy Lorenzo McIlwain, 37, of 1446 Winthrop Ave., was arrested March 30 on three counts of cruelty/depravation to children.
    According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report and warrants, McIlwain was arrested for offenses that occurred between Jan. 1 and March 30, including one in which investigators said he slapped his 7-year-old son, giving him a nosebleed.

  • Man injured as card game ends in shooting

    An accusation of cheating at cards resulted in losing hands for two men in Lancaster Saturday, with one ending up shot and the other facing an attempted murder charge.  
    Roderic Jeriel McCullough, 33, of Chester is charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during commission of a violent crime. He is accused of shooting James Twitty, 47, of Charlotte.

  • Man arrested after car rams into LARS bus several times

    A 53-year-old man was arrested Thursday after he was accused of ramming his car several times into a Lancaster Area Ride Service bus on North York Street after a dispute with its driver.
    Paul Barton of Blythewood was charged with one count of failure to stop, three counts of aggravated assault and one count of malicious injury to property.
    “A guy experiencing some sort of manic episode was running into the vehicle,” said Lancaster Police Chief Scott Grant.

  • Thief cracks Coke delivery truck’s safe

    A thief broke into a Coca-Cola delivery truck in broad daylight last week and stole cash from a safe, a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report said.
    According to the report, the driver told deputies he pulled into the parking lot of Pro Clean Dry Cleaners at 1772 Airport Road about 3 p.m. April 25 and, as usual, went inside to take the order before pulling the items from the trailer for stocking.
    The driver returned to the truck less than 15 minutes later, the incident report said, where he found the passenger side cab window broken out.

  • 2 charged in drone drops over prison

    Deputies arrested two Myrtle Beach men about 3 a.m. Wednesday and charged them with trying to use drones to drop contraband over a perimeter fence at Kershaw Correctional Institution.
    Charles Everett Adams and Justin Mervin Canady were arrested after a brief car chase that ended near the intersection of S.C. 601 and Haile Gold Mine Road.
    Both men were charged by the S.C. Department of Corrections with attempting to provide contraband materials to inmates and trespassing on state correctional properties.

  • Black-eyeball mug goes viral after 2 arrested in IL standoff

    A mugshot of an Indian Land woman with a tattooed face and black eyeballs went viral this weekend after her arrest with a friend earlier in the week during a standoff with sheriff’s deputies.

    Morgan Joyce Varn, 24, of Indian Land and Jonathan Mikael Robinson, 23, of Charlotte, were both charged with armed robbery and kidnapping after a standoff with deputies April 24. Another woman who remained inside the home was not charged.

  • 3 suspects arrested in huge string of break-ins

    Three Lancaster men face at least 31 counts of burglary and attempted burglary in a four-month string of break-ins mostly targeting businesses along S.C. 9 Bypass.

    John Josiah Bush, 20, Demarkeyo Wanya’Markel McClinton, 21, and Dentavious Tyrone Sims, whose age was unavailable, were charged in the cases after a joint investigation by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and the Lancaster Police Department.
    The LPD cases include an armed robbery charge against Bush for the April 13 holdup at Taco Bell.

  • Woman passed out in parking lot with small child in her lap

    A Lancaster woman faces multiple charges after police found her passed out inside a car with a small child in her lap.
    Alysia Danielle Wright, 22, of 1952 Misty Oak Drive, was charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, public intoxication and possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance after four Xanax pills were found in a diaper bag.
    The child, who was not hurt, was turned over to the S.C. Department of Social Services.
