  • Heavy rain headed this way

    Get ready to get wet.

    According to the National Weather Service, heavy rain could drench this part of the Carolinas today as moisture from Tropical Storm Andrea collides with a lingering cold front.

    The Associated Press reported Thursday, June 6, that up to 4 inches of rain could fall across the state through Saturday. 

    The National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm warning for Andrea along the Grand Strand. The heaviest rainfall is expected along the coast, where the center of the storm is expected to move.

  • Fancy Pokket breaks bread Thursday

    Though the sample size of dirt was small, the significance of the moment was quite major for Lancaster County. 

    Fancy Pokket Corp., a Canadian maker of bakery products, had its official groundbreaking ceremony Thursday, June 6, to mark its arrival here. 

    The company plans to build a new 57,000-square-foot baking plant inside the Lancaster County Air-Rail Industrial Park, which is being developed now. The investment is expected to create 68 jobs.

  • County EMS medic injured

    Although much of the details are sketchy, a county medic is recuperating after being injured in a car accident while tending to a medical emergency along Main Street on May 29. 

    The male medic, whose full name and age have not been released, was injured during a chain reaction of car collisions at the intersection of Gay and Main streets at about 9:30 p.m., according to a S.C. traffic collision report. 

    Lancaster Police Capt. Scott Grant said the medic was inside a car providing treatment when he was injured.

  • Suspect attempts to rob man at ATM

    The Lancaster Police Department has few leads in an attempted robbery late last month of a man withdrawing money from the ATM at Founders Federal Credit Union on North Main Street.

    According to the incident report, the 36-year-old man said as he pulled into the credit union between 12:30 and 1 a.m. May 26, he saw three unidentified teenage males at the nearby corner of North Main and Covenant streets. Two of them were riding mountain bikes, the other pushing a bicycle.

  • Municipal Planning Organization conducts road-use surveys on Charlotte Highway

    Drivers on Charlotte Highway were diverted last week to take part in road-use surveys for Charlotte and York County municipal planning organizations.

    Brought to the attention of The Lancaster News by curious local drivers, the surveys were conducted in the northbound lane of Charlotte Highway (U.S. 521) just south of Rock Hill Highway (S.C. 5).

  • Four stranded after boat runs out of gas

    Braving darkness and a light rain, a team of emergency responders rescued a family trapped on a tiny boat in the Cedar Creek Reservoir on Sunday night, June 2.

    Comprised of members from at least five different agencies, the rescue team was called to action after a 911 call alerted them to the stranded family about 9:30 p.m.

    I routinely tease Dean Faile for a comment he seemed to make at each Leadership Lancaster session.

    “This is by far my favorite day of the entire program!” I’m pretty sure I heard him say that at least four times during our six-month program sponsored by the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce.

    When looking back, though, I can see why he was moved to that opinion.

  • Upgrades at Kershaw bowling alley generate rave reviews

    KERSHAW – The days of scratched lanes, worn-out gutters and paper scorecards are over in Kershaw. 

    The bowling alley at Kershaw Recreation Center at Stevens Park has undergone major renovations that are expected to make it a desired hang-out spot once again. 

    Randy Jordan, who manages the center, said Superior Bowling Service of Columbia was contracted to make the improvements.

  • Revenue credits may help L&C Railroad stay on track

    A pair of county ordinances may soon help upgrade a vital Lancaster & Chester Railroad line, which in turn could help bring new industry to the county. 

    That’s the hope of Lancaster County Economic Development Corp. President Keith Tunnell, who discussed the two L&C ordinances during Lancaster County Council’s May 20 meeting.

    Beginning with the first step in the two-part process, Council looked at amending an ordinance that placed the company into a joint industrial and business park status last December.
