  • Buford beer run ends in arrest

    A Lancaster man was arrested on several charges after deputies found his two young children home alone Tuesday, Oct. 23.

    Christopher Blackmon, 26, of 227 Dixie School Road, was arrested on charges of public drunk and two counts of unlawful neglect of a child, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office press release. 

    The arrest came after deputies responded to the Buford Crossroads area about an intoxicated man on a mo-ped.

  • Brick plant now history

    VAN WYCK – Boral Brick staff engineer Ken Robinson stood watching the old Van Wyck brick plant’s demise. He had a job to do, but you could tell it was getting to him.

    At that point in mid-September, only a few recognizable parts of the plant remained: A brick chimney lost without its furnace, a brawny setting machine destined for another brick plant, and the old Ashe Brick Co. building sitting off to one side.

  • Council discusses best use of civil case settlement funds

    Road repairs, overtime costs and technology upgrades were just some of the suggestions from Lancaster County Council members on how to use a windfall from a recently settled civil suit.

    Council discussed the newfound funds at its Monday, Oct. 22, meeting after receiving a letter from 6th Circuit Solicitor Doug Barfield about an award received through a civil case between the state of South Carolina and mortgage broker LendingTree LLC.

  • Deputies arrest five in separate cases

    A Monroe, N.C., man whose DNA was found at the scene of several burglaries and larcenies in Lancaster in May, is now jailed at the Lancaster County Detention Center.

    Lucas Wayne Pate, 21, of Monroe, N.C., turned himself in to deputies Friday, Oct. 19 and was charged with second-degree burglary, three counts of larceny/breaking into a motor vehicle and two counts of damaging or tampering with a vehicle, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office press release.

  • State immigration unit arrests man during search

    Immigration authorities arrested a Lancaster man after the search of a Lynwood Drive home Tuesday, Oct. 23.

    Agents with the S.C. Department of Public Safety’s Immigration Enforcement Unit arrested Prudencio Sorcia Cervantes, 36, 1528 Lynwood Drive, on the charge of sale of fraudulent identification documents, said SCDPS spokeswoman Sherri Iacobelli. 

    The Department of Public Safety oversees several criminal justice agencies including S.C. Highway Patrol.

  • Three candidates vie for House 44 seat

    Running up the middle of the county and encompassing Kershaw, Heath Springs and most of Lancaster, S.C. House District 44 is among the largest political districts in Lancaster County.

    The battle for retiring seven-term Rep. Jimmy Neal’s (D) seat is also among the most hotly contested state-level races in this year’s general election.

  • City officer, motorist injured in collision

    Two motorists, one a Lancaster Police Department officer, are recovering from injuries after their vehicles collided in a city intersection Thursday afternoon, Oct. 11.

    Emergency responders swarmed the scene at the intersection of North Wylie and West Barr streets just after 3 p.m., where a gold Chrysler Town & Country minivan and black Lancaster Police Department patrol car crashed into each other only minutes earlier.

    Wilson readily admits that forcible entry is a bad thing in most law enforcement circles.

    But James Rowell, Adam Medlin and Preston Davis have no intention of using those skills for a life of crime or an unwanted midnight encounter with Davis’ dad, Lancaster Police Dept. Lt. Duane Davis.

  • City to expand recycling program

    The city of Lancaster’s push to save paper and plastics from the landfills has caught on throughout the county.

    Marty Cauthen, the city’s solid waste director, spoke at City Council’s meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 9, about six schools asking if the city can provide them with recycling containers and pick-up service.

    The schools are Andrew Jackson Middle, Andrew Jackson High, Clinton Elementary, Heath Springs Elementary, Indian Land High and McDonald Green Elementary.

  • Pageland crime spree ends with two arrests

    PAGELAND – Two Lancaster residents caused a lot of disruption in Pageland over the weekend of Sept. 29 and have now been charged for it.

    Chastity Marie Leach, 26, 2076 Old Camden Monroe Highway and Johnny Ray Pyatt, 35, 2345 Doc Holliday Circle, were arrested for 19 various counts, including shoplifting, property damage and motor vehicle theft over the span of three days (Sept. 29 to Oct. 1).
