  • State cuts auditor, treasurer’s salaries

    Lancaster County Council may soon help two county officials whose salaries were recently cut.

    In a letter dated Dec. 19 from S.C. Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom, both Lancaster County Auditor Cheryl Morgan and Treasurer R.E. “Dick” Rowell learned that their biweekly salary supplements were going to be cut. The first cuts came in their Jan. 2 paychecks.

  • LHS student killed at birthday party

    FORT LAWN – Fort Lawn police are still tracking down leads in the murder of a 15-year-old Lancaster boy at a birthday party late Saturday night.

    Dekeem Reed was killed after gunfire broke out at a party at the Fort Lawn Community Center late Saturday, said Fort Lawn Police Chief Mike Revels.

    Reed, a freshman at Lancaster High School, was pronounced dead at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster shortly after 12 a.m. Sunday.

    Revels said about 300 people were at the party, which was breaking up before the shooting shortly before midnight Saturday.

  • HOPE moving to temporary building during construction

    With volunteers, residents and clients crammed into HOPE’s Lancaster offices, and construction about to begin on a new addition, Elaine Adkins knew her team needed more space.

    That’s why Adkins, executive director of the charitable organization Helping Other People Effectively, called an emergency meeting Friday for her volunteers. Almost 50 volunteers showed up at HOPE’s Pageland Highway building, unaware why Adkins had called the meeting.

  • Projects planned for county airport

    The Lancaster County Airport may see reconstruction of its taxilane pavement within the next few years.

    Recently approved by Lancaster County Council and now awaiting approval by the Federal Aviation Administration, the project calls for the taxilane pavement at the airport to be repaved.

    Taxilanes are the portions of the ground on which aircrafts travel between taxiways and parking spaces.

  • Buford family loses home, many possessions to blaze

    Fire destroyed a home in the Buford community on Monday morning, and now a couple, their three children and two dogs are homeless.

    But Teresa Coley, 32, is thankful she was at Eastside Academy taking adult education classes, her husband, Charles, 44, a contractor, was at work, and her three children were at school.

    Before Charles left to run errands Monday, he put the family’s two dachshunds in a kennel outside the house on Rowell Road.

    “The main thing is, no one was in it,” Coley said. “Nobody was hurt.”

  • AARP offering help with taxes

    The AARP tax aide program is offering free income tax preparation, including free electronic filing service, from 1 to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays Feb. 2 through April 15 at the Lancaster Community Center, 508 E. Barr St. The last walk-in accepted each day is at 4:15 p.m. Appointments aren’t necessary.

  • Homeless shelter network to open

    After about two years of preparing, Family Promise is set to open its doors in Lancaster County to assist homeless families.

    Family Promise’s day center at 304 E. Arch St. is projected to open Feb. 1, with director Mike Montgomery at the helm.

    Montgomery worked at Springs Global for 26 years. He said he rededicated his life to Christ and wanted to go into full-time Christian service.

    He received a degree from Columbia International University and had originally planned to work in central Asia.

  • Police reports – January 25, 2009

    According to Lancaster Police Department reports:

    – A car trailer was stolen from behind Bullet Motorsports on S.C. 9 Bypass. The trailer, which was used to haul motorcycles, is 18-feet by 8-feet with wood flooring. The owner told an officer that he believes the trailer was taken sometime around Christmas. The trailer is valued at $5,800.

    –  Three men were charged with drug possession after a traffic stop on South Market Street on Jan. 19.

  • City to discuss funding for Artisan Center at meeting

    Lancaster City Council may vote to approve or pull funding to help The Artisan’s Center in downtown Lancaster with start-up and operating costs when it meets Tuesday.

    Christina Chastain, who plans to open the nonprofit community art center in downtown Lancaster, is slated to give a presentation to council at the meeting.

    Council members will also vote on a resolution supporting the University of South Carolina at Lancaster, which Gov. Mark Sanford has proposed to close within two years.
