  • Mancke discusses naturalists at USCL

    When Rudy Mancke speaks about natural history, he usually brings along some show-and-tell items for his audience.

    Mancke, a professor at the University of South Carolina and the retired co-host of SCETV’s “Nature Scene,” brought a box crammed full of scientific significance to his speech inside the atrium of the University of South Carolina at Lancaster’s Medford Library on Thursday. He was speaking of the library’s exhibit, “Naturalists in South Carolina: Audubon in Context,” which closed Sunday.

  • City of Light to hold grand opening

    INDIAN LAND – Inspiration Ministries will host grand opening events on Saturday and Sunday to celebrate the completion of phase one of its City of Light campus.

    Events will feature special guests Pat Robertson, Morris Cerullo, Benny Hinn, Judy Jacobs, Christ Tabernacle Choir, Lindell Cooley and more. 

    The events are free and open to the public, and will be televised live to a worldwide audience through Inspiration Ministries’ networks, INSP–The Inspiration Network and Inspiration Network.

  • Woman face arson charge in house fire

    A woman has been charged with arson after a fire burned down her boyfriend’s house Monday.

    Ashley V. Kirkland, 26, of 1909 Emerald Estates, was arrested and charged Wednesday by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office with second-degree arson.

    The fire started at 1131 2nd St. about 4:20 p.m. Monday, said Darren Player, deputy director for Lancaster County Fire Service. That was 70 minutes after officers responded to the house because of a reported domestic dispute, according to sheriff’s office incident reports.

  • Downtown banners to be unveiled

    After more than a month of work, the community banners designed by Lancaster County students will be unveiled Thursday.

    The unveiling kicks off Youth Art Month.

    As part of Youth Art Month, the Lancaster County Council of the Arts gallery at the Springs House, 201 W. Gay St., will exhibit about 100 works of art by Lancaster County School District students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

    Pieces include paintings, sculpture, photography and computer designs.

  • Twitty believes Obama will be another Roosevelt

    It’s been more than three months since the presidential election, but Gonze Lee Twitty is still wearing Barack Obama pins and buttons on his clothing.

    For the 90-year-old Lancaster County native, Obama has been more than a politician. He’s a symbol of hope and progress, and a man Twitty is proud to call his president.

    Obama’s ascension is the latest chapter in the quest for equality, he said.

  • County closer to repealing blue laws

    William Ferguson pleaded passionately with County Council on Monday night to keep the county’s blue laws intact.

    Ferguson, a Lancaster resident, spoke of his father who operated his own business for years, and despite never opening on Sundays, still had enough money to feed his eight children. He said this was proof that business owners and the county can function without repealing the blue laws.

    “If a man does not have enough business from six days a week, he need not have a seventh,” Ferguson said.

  • Repeal of blue laws up for a final vote Monday

    County Council will consider final reading of a proposed ordinance that would repeal blue laws in the county, except those that bar the sale of alcohol on Sundays.

    Council has given two readings to the ordinance, which would suspend blue laws through June 30, 2013. If enacted, it would allow county business owners to decide whether to open their doors on Sundays.

  • County looks at stimulus funding

    County Council wants a share of the $787 billion that was approved in the economic stimulus bill recently signed by President Barack Obama.

    Council is reviewing an extensive list of projects, including public buildings, roads and utility improvements.

    Called the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the bill allocates money for several items, including funds for infrastructure investment, tax relief and grants for state and local governments.

    The bill was passed by Congress on Feb. 13 and signed into law by Obama on Feb. 19.

  • Breaking News After domestic dispute call, fire guts house on 2nd Street

    Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic dispute at a 2nd Street home where a fire later destroyed the house.

    The fire started at Parnell Strain’s home about 4:20 p.m. Monday, said Darren Player, deputy director for Lancaster County Fire Service. That was 70 minutes after  officers responded to the house at 1131 2nd St. because of a reported domestic dispute, according to Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident reports.

  • Big Thursday Inc. celebrates record year for scholarships

    Big Thursday Inc. of Lancaster is producing big bucks for college-bound Lancaster County students headed to the University of South Carolina at Lancaster or Clemson University.

    Big Thursday Inc. of Lancaster, which annually raises scholarship funds for county students attending USCL and Clemson, presented record checks Monday in the Carole Ray Dowling Center at USCL.
