  • Weather postpones JAARS event at Lancaster County Airport

    The plan for JAARS to unveil its new Kodiak airplane at Lancaster County Airport on Saturday have been pushed back.

    With weather forecasters calling a 70 percent chance of rain and a high temperature in the mid-40s Saturday, JAARS spokesman Arthur Lightbody said the event was canceled.

    “The few visitors who would probably come would have a miserable experience exploring the exhibition tables and the plane would likely not be able to fly,” Lightbody said.

  • Gospel singing event will raise money to help Miles

    The Help Jody Miles Committee has been busy planning several fundraisers, including a gospel concert coming up Saturday.

    Miles, 56, who has served as director of Christian Services for 17 years, needs a liver transplant.

    She contracted hepatitis C in the 1980s from a blood transfusion, and the disease has damaged her liver.

  • Spring weather to end

    The air in Lancaster was aromatic with the smell of charcoal and hamburgers on the grill Sunday, as residents enjoyed temperatures in the 80s.

    Just a week ago, many residents were rushing to the store for a last-minute bread and milk run in preparation of a predicted 3 to 7-inch snowfall. The county got 2 to 4 inches of snow March 1 and 2.

    The week has started off with mild temperatures, with a high Wednesday of 83, according to the National Weather Service. But on Thursday, temperatures will begin to cool, with a high of 57 predicted.

  • Thieves take Red Cross mobile trailer

    Someone has stolen a trailer full of supplies used to assist people in times of crisis.

    Gina Amato, director of the local Red Cross, said the organization’s mobile trailer was stolen between 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday.

    The trailer, which is normally parked beside the Red Cross’ Woodland Drive office, holds sleeping cots, tables, chairs and other items needed when responding to fires and other emergencies.

    It also contains a generator to provide power in case victims don’t have electricity.

  • Tour will examine sites where Cornwallis marched

    Residents and historians alike will have a chance to explore the history of the Waxhaws at an all-day event Saturday.

    The event, “Waxhaws Revealed: A Backcountry Community as Andrew Jackson Knew It; 1750-1785,” will begin with a conference at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster about the people of the Waxhaws.

    It will then be followed by a tour of area locations where Lord Charles Cornwallis stopped at as British forces invaded the Carolinas in 1780.

  • 2 men shot in county in separate incidents

    Two Lancaster men were injured in separate shootings over the weekend.

    Jonathan Davis Rivera, 17, of 2099 Pinta Drive, has been charged by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office with assault and battery with intent to kill.

    According to a sheriff’s office incident report, an 18-year-old man was shot at Time Outs pool room on Memorial Park Road about 8:30 p.m. Friday.

    Deputies were called to the business and found the victim on the ground with a gunshot wound to his left hip.

  • City official to host fraud seminar

    A number of Lancaster County residents have been victims of fraud, and a local elected official is trying to do something to prevent others from following prey to similar schemes.

    Lancaster City Councilwoman Sara Eddins is hosting a fraud seminar at 7 p.m. Thursday in council chambers at City Hall.

    Eddins organized the seminar after receiving a suggestion from one of her constituents.

    All county residents are invited to attend the seminar, which will be facilitated by Lancaster Police Capt. Harlean Howard.

  • Sports panel: Medal is Crawford’s

    Former Indian Land High School track star and Van Wyck native Shawn Crawford may not want the medal, but Olympic records will reflect Crawford is the silver medalist in the men’s 200 meters at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

    Crawford’s finish was made final by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Friday.

    Netherlands Antilles sprinter Churandy Martina lost his appeal to be reinstated as silver medalist in the 200-meter race at the Beijing Olympics with the Court of Arbitration ruling.

  • MagicMasters to perform here Thursday

    Those high-flying basketball dunks and fancy passes you see on TV are coming to Lancaster as part of a high-energy exhibition promised to thrill all in attendance.

    The Harlem MagicMasters, who provide in-game entertainment similar to the Harlem Globetrotters, will be at Lancaster High School on Thursday to play against a team of community members. A halftime show will feature the local Tumble-N-Roll Elite All-Stars.

    The game will begin at 7 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium.

  • Council suspends HOPE’s rent

    County Council voted  Tuesday to suspend charitable organization HOPE in Lancaster’s rent payments.  

    The issue, brought to full council’s attention by Councilman Rudy Carter and County Administrator Steve Willis, has to do with rent payments HOPE was making on two buildings, the group’s permanent building and its temporary headquarters.

    Council voted unanimously to suspend rent for the permanent location while the group is temporarily relocated.
