  • County approves digitizing voter forms

    A new electronic database will soon help with organizing voter registration records in Lancaster County.

    County Council recently approved funding of more than $8,000 to create a searchable voter registration database.

    The database, which will be created by Charlotte-based Advanced Imaging, will include scanned copies of all the commission’s voter registration forms dating back to 1967.

    The digital copies will be kept on servers at another location. The cost to maintain the database will be $2,100 a year.

  • Burke moves on from jobs office

    Lynda Burke has stepped down as director of the Lancaster County office of the Employment Security Commission to take the same position in the Midlands.

    Burke, who was the local director for seven years, is now director of the Lexington County office. Her last day working in Lancaster was Feb. 26 and her first day in Lexington was Feb. 27.

    Last week, she talked exuberantly about her new post while expressing how difficult it was to leave Lancaster.

  • Man surprises burglars in home

    INDIAN LAND – An Indian Land man interrupted a burglary in progress at his Calvin Hall Road home Feb. 23.

    According to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the 18-year-old said he came home because he had left his wallet on the table.

    When he pulled into the yard, he saw a white work van with an empty ladder rack on it. He also noticed that the front door of his home was open, the report said.

    The man said he went into the home, and noticed a key in the front door. Two men were running toward the back door.

  • City of Light opens to public

    INDIAN LAND – Inspiration Ministries celebrated the opening of its International Prayer and Welcome Center on Feb. 28-March 1. The event marked the completion of Phase I of its City of Light world missions ministry outreach and partners center in Indian Land.

    Hosted by Inspiration Ministries’ chairman and CEO David Cerullo, the event was telecast live to more than 114 nations through the INSP-The Inspiration Network and Inspiration Network International.

  • Breaking NewsWoman dies in Pageland Highway car crash

    A woman was killed in a head-on crash on Pageland Highway on Tuesday night.

    The woman's name was not available on Wednesday.

    According to the S.C. Highway Patrol, the woman was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu east on S.C. 9 about 6 miles east of Lancaster when she crashed into a 2001 Ford pickup truck driven by Matthew Rape, 23, 2252 Ben Massey Road.

    Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin said Rape, who was headed west, drove left of center and sideswiped a 2001 Kia sedan driven by Calvin Curtis, 82, 3305 Lorraine Lane, before hitting the Malibu head-on.

  • Kershaw voters go to polls Tuesday

    KERSHAW – Four candidates are vying for two seats on Kershaw Town Council, and one incumbent is uncontested.

    Town residents will cast their votes at the Kershaw Recreation Center, 200 Close Circle, on Tuesday. The polling place will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

    Morris Russell, 41, and Pat Catoe, 66, are running for the District 4 seat. Incumbent Harold Williams, who has served on Town Council for eight years, decided not to run for reelection.

    Randy Seegars and John S. “Jody” Connell, 49, are running for the District 3 seat.

  • Weather postpones JAARS event at Lancaster County Airport

    The plan for JAARS to unveil its new Kodiak airplane at Lancaster County Airport on Saturday have been pushed back.

    With weather forecasters calling a 70 percent chance of rain and a high temperature in the mid-40s Saturday, JAARS spokesman Arthur Lightbody said the event was canceled.

    “The few visitors who would probably come would have a miserable experience exploring the exhibition tables and the plane would likely not be able to fly,” Lightbody said.

  • Gospel singing event will raise money to help Miles

    The Help Jody Miles Committee has been busy planning several fundraisers, including a gospel concert coming up Saturday.

    Miles, 56, who has served as director of Christian Services for 17 years, needs a liver transplant.

    She contracted hepatitis C in the 1980s from a blood transfusion, and the disease has damaged her liver.

  • Spring weather to end

    The air in Lancaster was aromatic with the smell of charcoal and hamburgers on the grill Sunday, as residents enjoyed temperatures in the 80s.

    Just a week ago, many residents were rushing to the store for a last-minute bread and milk run in preparation of a predicted 3 to 7-inch snowfall. The county got 2 to 4 inches of snow March 1 and 2.

    The week has started off with mild temperatures, with a high Wednesday of 83, according to the National Weather Service. But on Thursday, temperatures will begin to cool, with a high of 57 predicted.

  • Thieves take Red Cross mobile trailer

    Someone has stolen a trailer full of supplies used to assist people in times of crisis.

    Gina Amato, director of the local Red Cross, said the organization’s mobile trailer was stolen between 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday.

    The trailer, which is normally parked beside the Red Cross’ Woodland Drive office, holds sleeping cots, tables, chairs and other items needed when responding to fires and other emergencies.

    It also contains a generator to provide power in case victims don’t have electricity.
