  • 17.5 percent in county now jobless

    Lancaster County’s unemployment rate reached 17.5 percent in January.

    That’s up three points since December 2008, when the unemployment rate totaled 14.5 percent.

    David Veal, assistant area director for the S.C. Employment Security Commission, said layoffs and closings at Josalyn Clark, Springs Global, U.S. Textile, Wellman Inc. and ZF Lemforder contributed to the increase.

    Duracell has also shut down a few times for a week, with the company filing for unemployment benefits for workers, Veal said.

  • Thomas, Mulvaney argue at meeting

    After almost an hour of heated debate with County Council Chairman Fred Thomas, Sen. Mick Mulvaney left the council chambers scratching his head in confusion Wednesday night.

    “That was the strangest hour and a half I’ve ever been a part of,” Mulvaney said after the meeting.

  • UW interim director wants to help others

    Carolyn Petroski is thrilled to be serving the people of Lancaster.

    Born and raised in Lancaster County, and after several years of helping other nonprofit organizations, Petroski became the interim director of the United Way of Lancaster on Jan. 16. She expects to be in the position between six and 12 months, and said there’s a possibility of becoming the permanent director.

    She looks forward to helping residents.

  • What’s the status of the Dave Lyle Blvd. extension?

    Lancaster County Council met with York County Council last week to discuss possibilities for a future extension of Dave Lyle Boulevard.

    At the meeting at the Baxter Hood Center in Rock Hill, council members listened to several studies involving the potential construction of an extension to Dave Lyle Boulevard.

    The extension would provide a link between Interstate 77 and U.S. 521 as an alternate route south of Charlotte.

    Lancaster County and York County each contributed $75,000 to the study, which examined land and economic impacts of the proposed 9-mile road.

  • Seminar focuses on fibromyalgia

    An informational seminar aims to educate local residents on the symptoms and effects of fibromyalgia.

    Lancaster resident Sandra Sims is organizing the event, called “Walk In My Shoes,” to address questions and concerns about what it means to have fibromylagia, a condition that involves chronic muscle and joint pain that can be difficult for doctors to diagnose.

  • Woman pleads guilty to insurance fraud

    A 47-year-old Lancaster woman pleaded guilty Tuesday an insurance fraud crime.

    Barbara Goins, of  1747 Feature Road, pleaded  guilty to presenting a false claim for payment (for less than $5,000).

    The crime carries a penalty of up to five years in jail and a fine in the court’s discretion.

    Judge Brooks P. Goldsmith sentenced Goins to two years in prison, but he suspended the sentence to 18 months probation, which will end after the payment of court costs and fees.

  • Police reports - March 29, 2009

    According to Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office reports:

    - A Lancaster teenager was charged with drug possession after he passed a deputy on S.C. 903 near the Lancaster city limits on March 20.

    Stanley Melvin Reed, 17, 1750 Feature Road, was charged with simple possession of marijuana. The report said a deputy noticed a car following his patrol car too closely. The car passed the deputy and was clocked at 60 mph in a 45-mph zone.

    Reed admitted he had marijuana in the car, the report said.

  • Police reports - March 25, 2009

    According to Lancaster Police Department incident reports:

    - A Lancaster man was charged with indecent exposure after police got a call about a suspicious person in the Wal-Mart parking lot on March 14.

    Witnesses told officers that the man was riding around the parking lot looking at women and children. Officers found Michael Wayne Allen, 49, 1741 Williams Circle, in a green Jeep Cherokee. The report said Allen was “actively masturbating” while looking at a group of women in front of his vehicle.

  • Police reports - March 27, 2009

    According to Lancaster Police Department reports:

    - A Lancaster man was arrested on a drug charge after a traffic stop on March 18.

    William James Blakeney, 33, 4000 Alee Lane, was charged with possession of crack cocaine.

    The report said officers saw a truck stopped in front of a home on Hazel Street, a known drug area. Officers followed the truck when it pulled off and stopped it after the driver failed to make a complete stop at Dunlap Street and Willowlake Road, the report said.

  • Lancaster artist Jeff Lingle returns home to paint mural

    Muralist Jeff Lingle knows when it’s time to stop and put his brushes down.

    When he gets it right.

    “It’s not about what you want,” said Lingle, 41. “It’s about what it wants to be. When you let go and let the paint speak, you will be amazed by what happens.”

    A Lancaster native who now lives in Hermosa Beach, Calif., Lingle owns Over the Moon Murals.
