  • Councilwoman critical of inquiry to ethics panel

    Lancaster City Councilwoman Blackmon-Brace thinks City Administrator Helen Sowell has a personal vendetta against her.

    Blackmon-Brace said she doesn’t understand why Sowell didn’t contact her before writing a letter to the state Ethics Commission about the councilwoman’s bail bonding business.

    Sowell said it was her job to make sure that no council members were in violation of any ethics laws, and that’s why she contacted the Ethics Commission.

  • Now in session - temporary court

    The temporary court building for Lancaster County has brought smiles to the faces of local court officials.

    The 6th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, Lancaster Public Defender and Clerk of Court offices moved into the temporary quarters, formerly the home of Springs Global’s Wamsutta store, about two weeks ago.

    “We’re in better shape than we have been in 25 years,” said 6th Circuit Solicitor Doug Barfield. “Everyone is in the same place.”

  • Soliant lays off some employees

    Soliant LLC in Lancaster laid off employees about a week ago.

    The company, which manufactures paint film used in several different industries, used to employ about 100 people, according to a press release issued last year when the company was acquired by AkzoNobel.

    Soliant Human Resources Manager Diane Thompson refused to say how many people have been laid off at the plant. She also would not say how many people work there.

    “We have had a reduction in force and it was related to the economy,” Thompson said Thursday.

  • Continental opening its headquarters here this week

    INDIAN LAND – Continental Tire will celebrate the grand opening of its new Indian Land headquarters this week.

    The company, which moved its headquarters from Charlotte, will mark the occasion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its new 75,000-square foot building at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

    Matthias Schoenberg, CEO of Continental Tire North America, will speak at the event, followed by refreshments and a building tour. There will also be a mobile exhibit called “Untamed Innovation,” which spotlights various Continental tire technology.

  • Sheriff’s office seizes package with 25 pounds of marijuana

    HEATH SPRINGS – A Heath Springs man was arrested on several drug charges after drug officers found a package containing 25 pounds of marijuana at his home Wednesday.

    William Curtis Haggins, 38, of 643 Hart St., was charged with trafficking marijuana, possession of crack cocaine, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, according to arrest warrants.

  • Oliver named Patrol’s second in command

    A Lancaster High school graduate now leads the S.C. Highway Patrol, and now a county native has moved up to second-in-command of the state agency.

    S.C. Department of Public Safety Director Mark Keel announced Thursday that Mike Oliver has been named lieutenant colonel of the Highway Patrol.

  • Cost of school lunches to increase

     The Lancaster County School District is raising the cost of its meals and charging new fees for some summer school students.

    The school board approved the two pricing changes at its meeting Tuesday.

    Starting with the 2009-2010 school year, the district will charge students $1 for breakfast, an increase from the current 75 cents.

  • Council OKs $200,000 to help restore Old Presbyterian Church

    The city of Lancaster is intent on renovating a  historical church, but is asking other groups in the community to help with the funding.

    City Council voted unanimously March 10 to use $200,000 to stabilize Old Lancaster Presbyterian Church on West Gay Street.

    The church is the second-oldest brick structure in the county and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • Judge reduces bond for man facing felony DUI charge

    Judge Brooks Goldsmith lowered the bond for a man charged with the drunk-driving related death of his girlfriend last year.

    Robert Whisonant is charged with felony driving under the influence involving death and two counts of felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury.

    Sixth Circuit Solicitor Doug Barfield said he didn’t think the bond needed to be reduced during a hearing Friday morning.

    “He’s got a pretty reasonable bond for the nature of the charges,” Barfield said.

  • House votes to fund USCL in new budget

    A local state senator says a major step has been taken to prevent the University of South Carolina at Lancaster from closing.

    On Thursday, the state House passed its version of the 2009-10 budget that includes appropriations for USCL.

    Sen. Mick Mulvaney, R-District 16, said the $2.16 million that has been budgeted for USCL should be enough for the campus to remain open.

    Earlier this year, Gov. Mark Sanford called for USCL’s closure within two years as part of his 2009-10 budget proposal.
