  • Man accused of killing stepfather

    INDIAN LAND – An Indian Land man is accused of killing his stepfather and then holding authorities at bay in a four-hour standoff Friday night.

    James Pruitt, 52, of 11215 McAlpine Circle, shot himself after killing his stepfather, Robert Bethea, 74, authorities say.

    Pruitt was listed in critical condition in a Charlotte hospital Saturday afternoon.

    “He may make it,” Sheriff Barry Faile said.

    The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office planned to obtain warrants Saturday afternoon to charge Pruitt with murder in the death of Bethea.

  • ‘Mr. Ben’ retiring after 43 years as educator

    Arthur K. Benjamin was greeted with  raucous applause and loud cheers when he entered the A.R. Rucker Middle School gymnasium Thursday afternoon.

    Benjamin, an assistant principal, thought the event was a pep rally. But Benjamin, who is called “Mr. Ben” by students and many others, quickly realized the assembly was in his honor.

    Benjamin is retiring this year after working in education for more than 43 years. Several of his former principals and other coworkers came out Thursday to congratulate him and wish him well.

  • School district monitoring swine flu

    The Lancaster County School District is monitoring reports of the swine flu after two schools in the state have been closed.

    Lab results released Thursday confirmed that 13 South Carolinians have the swine flu virus. The lab results were announced by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    The 13 people who have the virus are all associated in some way with a recent school trip to Mexico, according to a S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control press release.

    The trip was sponsored by Newberry Academy in Newberry.

  • Cub Scouts ready for Pinewood Derby

    As NASCAR fans gear up for the Southern 500 in Darlington this weekend, there will be a race of a different sort on Saturday.

    That’s when Cub Scouts from Lancaster and Chester counties gather for their District Pinewood Derby.

    In the derby, Cub Scouts race miniature cars they build from wood. The cars are made from kits containing a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axles.

    Parents usually help their sons build the cars.

  • No one hurt in bus wreck

    No one was hurt in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday morning involving a Carolina Christian Academy bus headed for Columbia.

    The bus was traveling south on S.C. 200 when it struck a 2000 Chevrolet van in the rear, said Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

    The van, also heading south, was stopped in traffic when the collision occurred about 8:30 a.m. near Beckham Lane.

    The bus driver, John Waddington of Lancaster, was charged with driving too fast for conditions – wet road, Gaskin said.

  • Four file for Kershaw Town Council seats

    KERSHAW – Four people filed for office during the first day of filing for a special election in Kershaw.

    Wayne Rhodes, who has served on Kershaw Town Council before, and Pam Johnson have each filed to run for mayor.

    Genny Hendrix, who has served on council before, and Sonya Poole, have filed to run for the at-large seat. No candidates have signed up for the vacant District 2 seat, Town Administrator Tony Starnes said.

    Filing began Monday,

    The election will be held July 21.

  • Breaking News Suspect in shooting death dies in Charlotte hospital

    INDIAN LAND – The Indian Land man authorities say killed his stepfather last week has died.

    James Pruitt, 52, died at 5:48 a.m. Wednesday at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile said.

    The sheriff’s office had been planning to charge Pruitt with murder in the May 1 shooting death of Robert Bethea, 74.

    Authorities came to Bethea’s McAlpine Circle home to find Bethea on the ground and Pruitt holed up inside an outbuilding.

    Bethea and Pruitt had lived on the same property, Faile said.

  • Penny tax taxes effect

    If you pay attention to your cash register receipts, you probably noticed that Lancaster County’s sales tax just went up.

    The sales tax increased by a penny on Friday to 7 cents per dollar.

    The extra penny tax was approved by county voters in a referendum in November. It will be used to pay the bonds on the county’s proposed new courthouse, which is expected to cost about $33 million. The tax is on top of the state’s normal 5 percent sales tax and the county’s 1 percent local-option sales tax.

  • Hundreds attend annual KLS event

    With her blue Run for Ryan hat pulled down low, shielding her from the near 90 degree heat, Donna White spent much of Saturday raising money in honor of her late son.

    Hundreds of supporters joined her, turning out for the third annual Run for Ryan event at the Lancaster High School track field.

    The event featured a track meet between Lancaster, Buford and Indian Land high schools.

    There was also plenty of barbecue, face painting and inflatable rides for children.
