  • Donations down while more people shopping at area Goodwill stores

    Flipping through racks of blue jeans at Lancaster’s Goodwill Retail Store, Koios Orion is on the hunt for the perfect deal.

    He’s looking for a couple pairs of stylish jeans, and with prices as low as $5 for some pairs, Orion said the store is great for fashion-conscious customers on a budget.

    “They have a lot of stylish clothes, a lot of stuff you can’t find anywhere else,” Orion said. “It’s cheap. I usually can’t afford clothes, but I like to change clothes and change my style a lot.”

  • IL woman claims $1M lottery prize

    INDIAN LAND – The woman who won $1 million in the S.C. Education Lottery is an Indian Land resident, according to state lottery officials.

    Stephanie Hemminghaus, a state lottery spokeswoman, said the woman claimed her prize Thursday, but asked that her name not be released.

    The woman bought the Powerball ticket from the Panhandle Food Store on Charlotte Highway in Indian Land between March 28 and April 1 for the April 1 drawing.

    The winning white ball numbers were 2, 9, 33, 41 and 54. The red Powerball was 14, and the PowerPlay multiplier was 3.

  • County holds forum on community needs

    Lancaster County Council held a public hearing last week to gather input about community needs for housing, public facilities and economic development.

    Grazier Rhea of the Catawba Regional Council of Governments moderated the March 30 needs-assessment hearing to review the county’s past needs and identify new ones.

  • Local woman plays part in Hanna Montana movie

    FORT LAWN – Be on the lookout for Amy Johnson of Fort Lawn on the silver screen in “Hannah Montana: The Movie.”

    Johnson, a Lancaster native, has a part in the Walt Disney feature, which opens in theaters nationwide April 10. She is one of several line dancers expected to be shown in at least two scenes.

    Johnson can’t wait to see the movie, based on the Disney Channel’s popular “Hannah Montana” series.

    Johnson plans to go to Manchester Cinemas in Rock Hill.

  • Man shot in legs in home invasion

    A Lancaster man was shot in both legs during a home invasion at a Carolina Lane home early Wednesday.

    According to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report, deputies were called to the area of Carolina Lane and Usher Road, off Memorial Park Road, because gunshots were heard about 1 a.m.

    Officers arrived to find a man staggering toward the back of a mobile home.

    The 34-year-old man was bleeding from his face and head, and from both legs, the report said.

  • Westgate Exxon store robbed

    A West Meeting Street gas station was robbed Wednesday night, almost two months to the day after another robbery attempt was made there.

    According to a Lancaster Police Department incident report, a man came into Westgate Exxon about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday and leaned on the counter. The man told the clerk to give him all the money, “right quick,” the report said.

    The clerk said she had just made a deposit and there was not much money in the register.

  • Council OKs See Lancaster plan

    Lancaster County Council has approved its portion of See Lancaster’s reorganization plan.

    See Lancaster, which promotes tourism in the county, had requested that council allow it to move its welcome center into the Lancaster County Courthouse after the building is renovated.

    This was the latest step in a series of restructuring moves to retool See Lancaster’s aim, while also splitting oversight of the group between the city of Lancaster and the county.

  • UW seeks participants for community garden

    The United Way of Lancaster County is seeking participants for its community garden at the Lancaster Parks and Recreation Department, 260 Plantation Road.  

    Garden sites will be provided free for participants to grow their own produce.  

    Applications are available at the following locations:

    - HOPE in Lancaster, 721 E. Arch St.

    - Christian Services, 101 S. White St.

    - Lancaster Workforce Center, 705 N White St.

    - Lancaster Parks and Recreation Department

  • Man burned, loses everything in fire

    A Lancaster man is recovering after being burned in a fire at his home Saturday.

    According to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report, Rich Hill, Pleasant Hill and Elgin volunteer fire departments were called to a fire at South Potter Road home about 6:30 p.m.

  • Kershaw mayor, two council members, town attorney resign

    KERSHAW –  Kershaw Mayor Tommy Baker and two council members resigned from Town Council on Monday, but they gave no reason for their decision.

    Town’s Attorney Robert “Bob” Davis followed their lead, resigning after Town Council met for its regular April meeting Monday.

    The meeting went on as scheduled, despite the absence of Baker, his mother, Councilwoman Rose Marie Baker, and Councilman Lewis “Jabo” Sims, who also resigned their seats.

    The Bakers and Sims resigned before the meeting and did not attend it.
