  • City seeks college students for intern program

    A paid summer internship may be waiting for you.

    The city of Lancaster is looking for three college students to work for 10 weeks during the summer.

    Interns from previous summers have worked with the city’s courts, building and grounds and at City Hall with the human resources and finance departments.

    Shelia Thompson, the city’s human resources assistant, said where an intern is placed depends on the students’ interests.

    Each participant gets paid $7 an hour.

    This will be the fourth year for the summer internship program.

  • Roy Hardin Park swap gets first OK

    Councilman Jack Estridge raised several concerns about plans to relocate Indian Land’s Roy Hardin Park at Lancaster County Council’s meeting April 6.

    The plan, requested by York Development Group, LLC, would move the park from near Collins Road to an area one street over, near Shelley Mullis Road.

    There are only 2 acres of usable park space at the current park, out of a total 9.9 acres, and the company has requested moving the park in order to develop the land in another way. The new park would have 4.9 usable acres of space.

  • Police reports - April 24, 2009

    According to Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office reports:

    - A Lancaster man was arrested April 2 after a traffic stop on York Street.

    Carl Nicholas Hall, 26, 105 Hunter St., was charged with driving under the influence, driving under suspension and resisting arrest.

    According to the report, an officer stopped Hall because he knew Hall was driving under suspension. The officer turned on his blue light and siren after Hall did not stop for him on Springdale Road, the report said. Hall turned into a driveway on York Street, got out of the car and ran.

  • Run for Ryan event different this year

    Donna White sits peacefully on a bench as she watches young athletes run around the racing track at Lancaster High School.

    For White, those runners help keep her son’s memory alive, as they energetically engage in the activity he loved but was too ill to do in the last months of his life.

    White’s son, Ryan McKinney, died in February 2006 from Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS). He was 19.

    KLS is a rare neurological disorder that may result in altered behavior and a need for excessive sleep.

  • See Lancaster announces winners of Trivia Trek

    The Lancaster Downtown Business Association and See Lancaster have announced the winners from the city of Lancaster’s newest event, the Red Rose Trivia Trek.

    Children and their parents strolled through the historic downtown area in search of participating businesses identified by clusters of red balloons in front of the stores at the April 11 event.

    Answers to specific questions were identified at each location and recorded on each child’s personal answer sheet.

  • Two arrested in Rope Lane home invasion

    Two men have been arrested in connection with a home invasion on Rope Lane on Sunday night in which a man and woman were tied up.

    Reuben Timothy Curry, 24, of 1177 Shiloh Drive, and Tyrone Johnson Jr., 19, of Rock Hill, were arrested by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and were in possession of two stolen vehicles, said Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office attorney Tom Holland.

    Warrants from Lancaster County are pending, Holland said. The men will be charged with first-degree burglary and armed robbery.

  • City discusses Taylor Street drainage problem; confirms zoning for ALDI

    City officials are discussing what can be done to fix water drainage problems on Taylor Street.

    Public works director Jerry Crockett told City Council last week that his department has spent a lot of time trying to identify the source of the water, which accumulates on the western side of the street.

    The S.C. Department of Transportation made a berm to help the water drain into a nearby creek. Though it gave the water somewhere to go, it did not stop the accumulation, City Administrator Helen Sowell said.

  • County GOP to have its convention on April 21

    The Lancaster County Republican Party will hold its 2009 convention April 21 at the Carole Ray Dowling Center at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster.  

    The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

    Speakers scheduled to appear will be local GOP elected officials: Sen. Mick Mulvaney (R-District 16), Rep. Deborah Long (R-District 45) and District 1 County Council Larry McCullough.  

    Karen Floyd, a candidate for the chair of the state GOP, will also be in attendance.

  • Jobless rate dips slightly in March

    Lancaster County’s jobless rate fell slightly to 18 percent in March, down 0.3 percent from February.

    The county is tied with Bamberg County with the sixth-highest unemployment rate in the state, according to the S.C. Employment Security Commission.

    Lancaster County had a labor force of 29,626 in March, and 5,342 of those people were unemployed during the month, according to statistics from the S.C. Employment Security Commission.

  • Lottery introducing new games to play

    You may have heard that a convenience store in Indian Land recently sold a winning lottery ticket worth $1 million.

    While that may have generated interest among Lancaster County residents, officials with the S.C. Education Lottery want enthusiasm to remain high throughout the state.

    That’s why lottery representatives are going around South Carolina talking to groups about how much money the lottery has generated, how it is allocated and new products and games to look out for.

    They stopped by The Lancaster News office last week.
