• Indian Land VFW named All American

    Indian Land VFW Post 12136

    After only one full year of operation, Indian Land Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12136 not only took top honors in South Carolina, but also earned All American recognition from the national VFW.

    The Indian Land post, chartered Feb. 22, 2014, began full operations July 1, 2014.

    It now boasts a 100 members, along with an active Ladies Auxiliary.

    The post garnered All State honors, the highest award a VFW post can receive at the S.C. VFW state convention June 6.

    GREAT FALLS – The Great Falls-Kershaw Shrine Club will hold a poker run, “Rollin’ on the River,” from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8. Boats and bikes are welcome.

    Participants will pick up their cards at Creekside at Beaver Creek, Clear Water Cove Marina, Colonel Creek Boat Landing, 97 Kickstand, Wateree Creek at the mouth/red bank (boat on the water) and Dutchman Creek Marina.

    In his years as a firefighter and captain for Lancaster Fire Department, Gonzie Mackey saw his share of house fires.

    But a late afternoon blaze on Monday, Aug. 3, hit close to home; really close to home.

    The workshop behind the retired firefighter’s residence on Glenwood Avenue was heavily damaged when an ill-running motorcycle parked inside of it started a fire.

    PAGELAND – The Pageland Police Department has made another arrest in the armed robbery of convenience stores in three Carolina counties.

    Yamilez Matos, 19, of Wingate, N.C., is now facing multiple charges.

    She is charged with armed robbery in connection to the July 7 hold-up of Kountry Korner on South Van Lingo Mungo Boulevard in Pageland.

    For parents trying to cope with high back-to-school expenses, some relief is on the way.

    From 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, to midnight Sunday, Aug. 9, they can buy school supplies and some household items without having to pay state sales tax. In Lancaster County, that is a savings of 8 percent.

    Exempt or sales tax free items include:

    u Clothing and clothing accessories, including, hats, scarves, hosiery and handbags, and footwear

  • IL man faces sex charges

    INDIAN LAND – A man arrested in May is facing several charges of molesting a minor repeatedly for more than eight years.

    William Joe Craig, 60, of the 1100 block of Fort Mill Highway, is charged with 16 counts stemming from his early May arrest, along with two more counts added in late July, according to the online 6th Judicial Circuit Public Index.

  • Some to get energy conservation help

    Residents in the Brooklyn, Midway, Dobson and French streets area will get some free help with lowering their home energy bills this fall.

    The Duke Energy Residential Neighborhood Program will target those areas in its second foray into Lancaster.

    Lancaster City Council heard an update on the plan during a presentation by Duke Energy program manager Sue Dinnsen at its Tuesday, July 28, meeting.

    Community tips and a joyride in a stolen car led to the apprehension of three juveniles suspected of trying to break into a Lancaster package store last week.

    The Lancaster County Sherriff’s Office asked for the public’s help last Friday, July 24, in identifying suspects caught on surveillance video the night before breaking the glass out of the back door of Community Discount Beverage at 2095 Lynwood Drive.
