• Prudential ribbon cutting is Wednesday

    Prudential Insurance Company-George McDow, Financial Professional, will celebrate its recent move to a new location with a special ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
    Prudential Insurance Company’s new office is located at 1129-A Highway 9 Bypass.
    George McDow, his staff, Mayor Joe Shaw and County Council Chair Kathy Sistare, along with Chamber Chair Susan Rowell, and other elected officials and chamber representatives will participate in the event.

  • Mulvaney to speak at Tea Party rally

    U.S. Congressman Mick Mulvaney will be the guest speaker at the Lancaster County Tea Party rally at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Mike Williams Builders building, 1351 Charlotte Highway.
    Mulvaney's speech is on limited government. He will answer questions about that topic.

  • Second contract post office opens

    Indian Land residents now have another choice in mail services with the opening of a new contract U.S. Postal Service office near Doby’s Bridge Road.
    Located inside Liberty Tax Service at 8441 Charlotte Highway in the Commons at Doby’s Bridge shopping center next to the Gate service station, the site offers a full range of outgoing postal services.
    Indian Land’s original contract post office at the MJ Mart on the corner of Charlotte Highway and S.C. 160 will remain open.

  • Man killed after fall from truck

    Authorities are investigating what led to a 23-year-old volunteer firefighter’s death following a fall from a moving pickup truck early Saturday morning.
    William Blackmon, of Honeycutt Road, died after he fell off the back of a truck, according to Lancaster County Deputy Coroner Marie Broome.
    An autopsy was planned for Saturday, though his official cause of death was not known as of Saturday morning, Broome said.

  • USCL faculty member hit by vehicle

    A University of South Carolina Lancaster professor was severely injured after she was hit by a pickup truck late Thursday night.
    USCL foreign languages professor Nathalie Davaut, 44, of Gastonia, N.C., was walking across Hubbard Drive near the university when she was struck at about 9 p.m., according to a Lancaster Police Department incident report.
    The incident was also confirmed by John Rutledge, director of law enforcement and security for USCL.

  • Armed men rob store

    Crouching down outside of a Twin Pines business early Wednesday afternoon, a crime scene investigator searched for clues only minutes after two men robbed the store at gunpoint.
    Donning blue gloves, the investigator dusted for fingerprints along the front door of We Buy Gold, at 1427 Charlotte Highway. Nearby, the small store parking lot was crammed full of sheriff’s patrol cars and a crime scene unit van.

  • Officials arrest man after car chase

    Deputies arrested a Lancaster man on several charges after they were led on a high-speed chase through the county Tuesday morning.
    John Jerrod Hill, 29, 337 Grace Ave., was arrested Feb. 14 and charged with failure to stop for blue lights, second offense, driving under suspension, third offense, habitual traffic offender for driving under suspension and resisting arrest.

  • Cedric ‘Mean Man’ Mingo Day is Saturday

    A local boxing legend will be at a Saturday event intended to teach more than punching techniques.
    Cedric “Mean Man” Mingo, a Lancaster native who became a world boxing champion in the 1980s, will be at Sonic Drive In from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day.
    The event, which includes a boxing demonstration and autograph session, is being held to honor Cedric Mingo Day – a declaration made 22 years ago by Lancaster Mayor Joe Shaw.
    The official day is Feb. 17.

  • Officers looking for two suspects in armed robbery of IL Walmart

    Authorities are investigating an armed robbery that took place Monday night at the Indian Land Walmart.
    Sheriff’s deputies came to the supercenter at 10048 Charlotte Highway at 8 p.m. after two men approached the service desk with a note demanding money, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office press release.
    One of the suspects flashed a handgun, the release said.

  • Report: Woman punched during home burglary

    A Lancaster woman has been accused in the burglary of a McIlwain Road home Sunday morning that resulted in the assault of a woman inside.
    The resident told a sheriff's deputy that he and his girlfriend were getting ready for bed when he heard a loud noise. A few seconds later, he heard his girlfriend scream, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff's Office incident report.
