  • Fundraisers to help local teen get much-needed hearing aids

    Two local organizations are holding fundraisers to help a local teen suffering permanent nerve damage to his ears.
    Arntearreus “Smiley” Richardson, 17, the son of Audrey and Arnold Richardson of Lancaster, is a member of Mt. Tabor A.M.E. Zion Church and the Lancaster Fire Department’s Explorer program.
    Both organizations are holding fundraisers to help defray medical costs associated with Richardson’s treatment and to purchase much-needed hearing aids.

  • Man arrested for aggravated assault

    Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man for aggravated assault earlier this month after he strangled a woman while she spoke with a 911 dispatcher.
    Richard Wayne Hall, 28, 1132 Sixth St., was arrested May 6 and charged with aggravated criminal domestic violence, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

  • It’s festival time in Great Falls

    GREAT FALLS – Today is the official kick off  of the Memorial Day weekend.
    And with the annual holiday also comes an annual event in Great Falls – the Flopeye Fish Festival.
    The 29th annual Flopeye Fish Festival will be held Saturday, May 26, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the Great Falls Industrial Park.
    Held on Memorial Day weekend each year, the festival offers a homecoming atmosphere for people to reunite with friends and family members while enjoying food and entertainment.

  • Woman arrested for arson

    A Lancaster woman was arrested this week for setting a fire inside her apartment.
    Tammy Lynn Williams, 45, 1518 Westway Apartments, was charged with arson in connection with a fire that burned her apartment on Tuesday, May 22, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office press release.

  • Two teens arrested in hit and run

    A tip from the community led to the arrest of two teenagers in a hit and run that injured two pedestrians last weekend.
    Brett Daniel Wright, 18, and Joshua Neal Barton, 19, both of 1174 Chase Madison Drive, were arrested Tuesday, May 22, and each charged with attempted murder, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office press release.

  • One to grow on

    COLUMBIA – A tough loss did little to tarnish a banner season that saw the Indian Land Warriors soccer team earn the silver trophy in its run for the Class AA state  gold.

    The Warriors, who finished 21-5, took home the silver medals and a state runner-up trophy after falling to Class AA Lower State champion Academic Magnet, 5-0, on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Columbia.

  • Jobless rate drops to 11.1 percent

    An increase in Lancaster County’s reported labor force coincides with another drop in its monthly jobless rate.

    The county had a 11.1 percent unemployment rate for April, a considerable dip from the 11.6 posted in March, according to statistics released last week from by the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.

    There were 30,372 people in Lancaster County’s labor force last month, a jump of 39 from the 30,533 reported for March. The official unemployment level for the county is now at 3,379.

  • Four employees burned at former Bowater plant

    One of the four employees burned in a chemical-related accident at a Catawba paper plant has been released from the hospital.

    Debbie Johnston, a spokeswoman for Resolute Forest Products, said Monday that three workers at its Catawba plant had been taken to burn centers after being exposed to sodium hydroxide about 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20.

    The fourth employee was taken to a Charlotte hospital and has since been released, Johnston said.

  • Deputies charge man under house arrest with aggravated domestic violence

    A Lancaster man out on bond and wearing a GPS- monitoring device was arrested earlier this month on a domestic violence charge. 

    John Jarrod Hill, 29, 1741 Old Carter Road, was arrested May 6 and charged with aggravated criminal domestic violence, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report. 

    The charge was filed after a deputy responded to an assault call in the 1700 block of Old Carter Street on May 5.

  • Justin Pate to compete in high school state rodeo championship this week

    Got a hankerin’ for all things cowboy? 

    Then take a short trip to Clemson this weekend, and see 16-year-old Lancaster resident Justin “P-Nut” Pate compete in the 37th Annual S. C. High School Rodeo Association’s State Championship.

    The championship runs Thursday through Saturday. 

    It offers high school competitors the chance to win prizes, scholarships, and a chance to compete in the National Championship, to be held in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
