Dr. Richard Wescoat, a general practitioner whose career spanned more than 50 years, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the age of 89.
Wescoat was born in Summerville and opened a medical practice in Lancaster in 1950 after attending Clemson University and the Medical College of South Carolina, from which he graduated in 1947.
Shortly after, he served as an U.S. Army captain in the Medical Corps and did a tour of duty in Korea, working in a MASH unit. His service earned him a Bronze Star with a V for Valor designation.
