After a week under heavy sedation, the first thing Amy Saylors said was, "I've got to pay my bills."

Saylors had been hospitalized with a case of pneumonia so severe that doctors at the Medical University of South Carolina did not have a name for it. They said she was lucky to be alive.

It was New Year's Day when Saylors became so sick that an ambulance had to transport her from Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster more than three hours south to MUSC in Charleston.

A roller coaster ride in Ohio was the inspiration behind a winning calculus project.

Buford High School seniors T.J. Roberts and Taylor Threatt created a roller coaster display called TNT, which was voted the best of all displays presented by calculus students in Lancaster County School District.

Uncle Sam and the state of South Carolina are knocking at the doors of Lancaster County residents again, looking for their share of taxes from 2007.

And of course, there are always new things to be aware of in a new tax season.

Each year, the federal government changes various standard and itemized deduction amounts because of inflationary reasons. New deductions are also added.

INDIAN LAND – There were sticky notes on the lockers that told each student which one was theirs.

Even though some had trouble mastering their combinations, they were glad that the lockers were considerably larger than the ones they had been using at their former school.

Tuesday was the first day of class for Indian Land Middle School students in the recently renovated building that used to serve as the high school.

Aside from having new lockers, the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders appeared happy to have a building to call their own.
