  • Officials target underage drinking

    Underage drinking in the region is now under attack.

    That was the message from a meeting of law enforcement and behavioral/health agencies in the 6th Judicial Circuit, who met Thursday at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster to discuss progress being made by new Alcohol Enforcement Teams (AETs) to enforce the state's tougher underage drinking laws passed last year. The judicial circuit includes Lancaster, Chester and Fairfield counties.

  • Two Indian Land residents say they will file for County Council seat

    INDIAN LAND – Two Indian Land residents have announced their intentions to run for County Council District 1.

    Longtime Indian Land resident Alan Patterson and Larry McCullough, a newcomer to Sun City Carolina Lakes, told Indian Land Action Council members at their Monday night meeting that they intend to run for the seat. Both intend to run as Republicans.

    Filing for the partisan seats up for election this year will be March 17-31.

  • Democrats get their say in presidential contest

    The race for the Democratic Party nomination for president is a historic one.

    For the first time in history, the two leading candidates are a woman, Hillary Clinton, and a black man, Barack Obama.

    The candidate in third place – in both the delegate race and in most polls in the state and nation – is John Edwards, the former U.S. senator from North Carolina. If Edwards won the nominee and then were elected president, he'd be the first president to claim the Palmetto State as his birthplace since Andrew Jackson. Edwards was born in Seneca.

  • Humane society off to strong start

    Two pit bull puppies were among the attendees of the Indian Land Action Council's meeting Monday night.

    The brindle and blond pups gave out happy kisses and helped drive home the message from the council's guests - members of the newly formed Humane Society of Lancaster County.

    The humane society has gone from "zero to 100 miles an hour in 90 days," said its vice president, B.J. Mishoe, who has been a volunteer at the Lancaster County Animal Shelter for the past several years.

    John Edwards told a Lancaster audience Wednesday that if he's elected president, he won't forget where he came from.

    The Seneca native said rural America will be a true concern for him if he's elected.

    "You have been ignored for too long," he told a packed crowd at Bundy Auditorium at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster. "I will not ignore you as president."

  • Where Lancaster County residents vote in the presidential primary

    Some polling places consolidated

    You may be one of the Lancaster County residents who won't vote in your usual polling place for the Democratic presidential primary. The county combined several precincts because it did not get enough money from the state to open all precincts for the presidential primaries.

    The polling places that have been combined and where you'll vote are:

    - Antioch and Hyde Park - Hyde Park Baptist Church, 1898 Flat Creek Road

    - Belair and Belair II - Indian Land Recreation Center, 8286 Charlotte Highway, Indian Land

  • Man shot in French Street parking lot

    "Call 911. I'm dying."

    Those are the words a man shouted across a parking lot on French Street on Wednesday afternoon.

    A Masonic lodge, the Lancaster County Clemson Extension office, the Lancaster County Economic Development office, Discovery School and houses surround the parking lot.

    A witness, who asked not to be named, said she thought she heard a car backfire.

    "Then it went boom, boom, boom, boom, boom and I said, 'That's not a car,' " the woman said.

  • Mulvaney to seek Senate seat

    S.C. House District 45 Rep. Mick Mulvaney announced today that he will run for the S.C. Senate District 16 seat being vacated by Greg Gregory of Lancaster.

    Mulvaney will make a formal announcement tour in early February, but he has already received the support of Gregory and several other key business leaders in the district.

  • Edwards to stump in Lancaster

    Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards will bring his presidential campaign to Lancaster today.

    Edwards, a South Carolina native and former senator from North Carolina, will appear at the Bradley Arts and Sciences Building at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster as part of his two-day Back Home, Back Roads Barnstorm tour.

    Edwards, who's vying for the Democratic nomination, is scheduled to be at USCL at 2:45 p.m. Doors open at 2:15 p.m.

  • King's dream was for equality for everyone, not just blacks

    HEATH SPRINGS - Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream was that everyone could have an equal chance at the American dream, not just black people.

    That was the message delivered to those who filled the fellowship room at the United Citizens Club of Heath Springs Monday morning at the group's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast.

    "He not only blessed America, he touched the world," said the Rev. William Coleman, pastor of Bright Light Missionary Baptist Church, who was guest speaker at the event. "He was concerned with the welfare of humanity."
