  • Ball players, reporter help students with assignment

    Students across the school district met at Covenant Baptist Church on Feb. 8 for the 12th annual READ-In.

    Forty middle school students from area schools were divided into different groups to discuss the book, "Last Shot: A Final Four Mystery" by John Feinstein.

    A.R. Rucker sixth-grader JeNae Jones enjoyed the book.

    "I like the book because it's about sports... Basketball is a great sport and it's competitive," Jones said.

    Just like the characters in the book, students received pointers about being a reporter.

  • Chamber, LCEDC get IL office

    INDIAN LAND - Business leaders, chamber of commerce members and employment officials now have a place to meet in the Panhandle.

    Merrifield Partners, the developer of 521 Commerce Center on U.S. 521, donated a 1,300-square-foot space in the Pinckney Building for use by Lancaster County Economic Development Corp., Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and the local office of the S.C. Employment Security Commission.

    The three entities will share the cost of a monthly $565 maintenance fee, said LCEDC President Keith Tunnell.

  • Valentine's Day inspires couple to marry at probate judge's office

    Jacqueline Montgomery and Robert Barber decided to express their love in a major way on Valentine's Day - they got married.

    After Barber proposed to the Lancaster native last year, he told her that she could pick the wedding date. After initially planning to wed in the fall, she thought that Valentine's Day would be the most appropriate day.

    "Today is a special day for us," she said while glazing into Barber's eyes. "It's the perfect day for us to unite."

  • Church baptizes woman at 104

    Recently members and guests of Flint Ridge Baptist Church witnessed something that no one ever has before.

    Florence Alexander was among four others who were baptized on Feb. 10.

    What makes Alexander so unique?

    She's 104 years old.

    Pastor Kelvin Hinson of Flint Ridge introduced his brother, Pastor Stacey Hinson of Higher Ground Christian Church, who would be baptizing Alexander.

    Their church "adopted" Alexander after several members visited her before Christmas to see if she had any needs.

  • Harriet Tubman's relative talks to students here

    Students at Discovery School recently got the chance to hear the story of Harriet Tubman from a unique perspective.

    Rashelle Glover, a 13-year-old descendant of Tubman, spoke to students Friday morning, sharing family stories and items she's collected.

    Glover, 13, is Tubman's great-great-great-great grand niece on her father's side. She lives in Auburn, N.Y., where Tubman settled and is buried.

  • Roles reversed as reporter participates in exercise

    While covering a story at Covenant Baptist Church on Feb. 8., the roles were reversed, and I wound up as a source in several other articles.

    Forty middle-schoolers throughout the county were taking notes in their reporter pads and asking questions - all in an effort to write that perfect news story. I happened to be one of the people who was on the receiving end of those inquiries.

    Ten students from four middle schools in the Lancaster County School District participated in a read-in event that day. They had previously volunteered to read a book and met to discuss it.

  • Report of smoke brings fire trucks to The Lancaster News building

    Some Lancaster Fire Department firefighters may have had "worst case scenario" on their minds after they were called to a possible fire at The Lancaster News office on North White Street on Thursday night.

    About 6:30 p.m., a passers-by called dispatchers to report that there was heavy smoke around the newspaper building.

    Some employees inside the building were oblivious to the flashing red lights of the fire trucks outside as firefighters entered the building.

  • York Co. group offers shelter organizers guidance

    The Interfaith Hospitality Network of shelters in York County has been helping the working poor with children for nine years.

    Now that some Lancaster County churches are trying to organize a network of homeless shelters, they're looking to the York County group for guidance.

    "We're proud to support Lancaster County," said Jennifer Coye, executive director of the Interfaith Hospitality Network in York County. "We've come down there to the community meetings to talk about how things work here."

  • Reliving the struggles, traditions of slavery

    Slavery frustrated and drained Kessie so much that she asked God to take her life away.

    She had been dragged from her homeland of Africa, brought to America on a ship and forced into life as a slave. Through the process, she was separated from her family and doubted if she would ever see them again.

    Kessie's frequent loud calls to God and emotional hymns represented the pain she had been feeling for a long time.

    She and other slaves were often whipped by their masters, leaving blood running from their backs and mouths. She wondered if life could get any worse.

  • Colonial banquet set for March 1

    GREAT FALLS - Come celebrate the Colonial period in upstate South Carolina at the sixth annual Colonial banquet, sponsored by the Great Falls Home Town Association.

    This sixth annual banquet and auction will be held March 1 at the Great Falls War Memorial Building to benefit the Battle of Beckhamville re-enactment and the work of the GFHTA. The event will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.
