  • No shortage of events in area this week

    No one in Lancaster County should complain that there's nothing to do here this week. From Lancaster to Kershaw, to the air, the streets and local art galleries, there will be something to do for everyone starting Thursday night. Most of the events are free or offered at low cost.

  • FAA investigating crash

    The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the May 2 crash landing of a small airplane on the Catawba River.

    Fort Lawn resident John Sedberry was piloting the Glasair plane that was en route to Florida. His wife and their two dogs were traveling with him. No one was hurt in the crash.

    Sedberry told authorities the engine shut off, forcing the plane to crash land on the river, just moments after take off from nearby Lancaster County Airport.

    A Lancaster County Sheriff's Office report says the plane was towed to a nearby dock by someone's personal boat.

  • Residents oppose plan to down trees

    KERSHAW – About 25 trees are slated to be cut down for safety considerations on Matson Street in Kershaw.

    The first few came down recently

    But the decision to remove the trees, approved earlier this year by Kershaw Town Council, has upset some town residents.

    Denise Hegler, who lives on Matson Street, though not where the trees are slated for removal, expects at least 10 people will speak at Monday's Town Council meeting to tell council members they oppose the plans.

  • Teen accused of trying to disrupt school

    A Lancaster High School senior is accused of starting a rumor about a planned shooting on the campus last week.

    Parris Williams, 18, 312 Dixon Road, has been charged with disturbing school.

    Lancaster Police say Williams began a chain of cell phone text messages that read a shooting would take place at the school Thursday. This was the second such rumor at Lancaster High since April.

    The school's resource officers looked into the situation after a student told administration about the message. Police backtracked the text messages and were led to Williams.

  • Council gives 2nd approval to prostitution ordinance

    Lancaster County sheriff's deputies arrested eight people last year on prostitution charges.

    If the sheriff's office had more manpower, it could make prostitution stings every night, with many arrests, sheriff's office spokesman Tom Holland told County Council on Monday night.

    "We know what they're doing," Holland said. They know we know what they're doing."

  • Girl in good condition after dog attack

    A 9-year-old girl was attacked by a pit bull at her Legacy Road home on Thursday.

    Lancaster County Animal Control Director Joel Hinson said the attack happened during a family get-together.

    The girl and other children were jumping on a trampoline.

    Hinson said the male pit bull, named Powder, broke free from his chain on a runner and charged the children, biting the girl on her left leg.

    "She's going to have to have skin grafts," Hinson said Friday. "She was tore up pretty good."

  • No one seriously hurt in wreck on U.S. 521

    Christopher Crook got a 2008 Kia Spectra as an early high school graduation present.

    It sat wrecked in the middle of U.S. 521 on Wednesday.

    Crook, a senior at Parkwood High School in bordering Union County, was driving to Pizza Hut in Lancaster during a lunch break from final exams when the accident occurred.

    As he drove west from Craig Manor Road across U.S. 521, he collided with a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier that was trying to make a left turn onto U.S. 521 from Hubbard Drive – the opposite direction. The accident happened about 1:30 p.m.

  • Man gets 40 years in shooting death

    A Lancaster County jury found a 38-year-old Lancaster man guilty of murder after about 30 minutes of deliberations Wednesday.

    The jury convicted Jerry McGriff of the December 2006 shooting death of Lamont Witherspoon, 32.

    McGriff was also convicted of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and unlawful carrying of a pistol after two and half days of testimony.

  • Schools would like a cut of developer fees

    School district officials talked with County Council members Monday about receiving a piece of the pie when it comes to the development fees the county collects.

    Council and school officials have suggested a 60/40 split in the development fees the county collects from developers per new house. If the county collects $10,000 per home, for example, $4,000 of that would go to the school district.
