They’re probably too young to understand the ins and outs of home insurance. And they may not be able to explain all the conditions that might cause a house fire.

But there’s one thing for sure – North Elementary School kindergartners realize how much help a person needs if they lose their home in a fire.

Saniiya Mingo, a kindergartner at the school, has received much support from fellow students and her teachers after her Chandler Place home burned a week ago.

Take kindergartner Julia Sowell, for instance.

The Lancaster County Soil and Water Conservation District announced the winners of its 2007 conservation contests last week.

The contest, open to students in the Lancaster County School District, carried the theme The Living Soil.

Elementary school participants made either poster boards or bulletin boards that tied into soil and conservation. Four classes entered the conservation bulletin board contest and 500 students throughout the district entered the poster contest.

Indian Land resident Wayne Carter played Jesus in 2002 and today, he’ll get to play God in “Children of Eden,” opening at the Community Playhouse of Lancaster County.

“The play is based on the first nine and a half chapters of the Book of Genesis and is really the story of parents and children, and the growing pains they experience as their children grow up,” Carter said. “They learn that they have to let go of the ones they love so they can find their own way.”

A Lancaster man tells police he was robbed at gunpoint Monday afternoon and another man was shot in the leg later that day in what appears to be unrelated incidents.

Police responded to a call at 4:44 p.m. and saw a man standing in the road around the 500th block of Hampton Road.

The man told police that another man came up to his van, put a handgun in his face and ordered him to exit the vehicle, according to an incident report.

A second man punched the victim in the back and a third man put a pistol in his face, the report said.
