  • Mulvaney backs Gregory in Senate District 16 race

    U.S. House District 5 Rep. Mick Mulvaney has officially endorsed Greg Gregory as the candidate best suited to fill the S.C. Senate District 16 seat he vacated in December after his winning congressional bid.
    The endorsement comes less than a month after Gregory unexpectedly announced he would seek re-election to the District 16 seat, which he held between 1992 and 2008.

    A shiny tiara, a cheerful smile and bright gray eyes.
    That picture of Alyssah “Shirley” Totherow has most likely been a source of joy, but now yields mixed emotions as family members mourn her loss.
    The 3-year-old Lancaster County girl died Tuesday night after falling from a moving truck outside a Mangum Drive home, said Lancaster County Deputy Coroner Glen Crawford.
    Shirley was taken to Springs Memorial Hospital, where she died at about 8:35 p.m., Crawford said.

  • Deputies’ names revealed

    A witness to the shooting of a Lancaster man Monday night by sheriff’s deputies during a confrontation at a Lynwood Drive car wash said the victim appeared intoxicated, but calm until deputies arrived on the scene.
    Meanwhile, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the names of the deputies involved in the incident. They are Deputy Jeramie MacKinson and Deputy Michael Kimbrell, said sheriff’s Maj. David Belk.

  • Landfill axed?

    With a show of hands, Lancaster County Council members voted unanimously Tuesday night on an ordinance that could hamper plans for a proposed solid waste landfill in the county.
    Only minutes before the start of council’s meeting, copies of the last-minute ordinance circulated through the crowd of more than 150 residents who turned out for the meeting.

    The public will have a chance to hear the Republican candidates for the open District 16 state Senate seat discuss key issues early next week.  Those five candidates are slated to appear at a special forum that will be held Monday inside the Bradley Building multipurpose room at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster.

  • Lancaster woman found dead in Kershaw County

    CAMDEN – One of two bodies found Tuesday and Wednesday in Kershaw County is from Lancaster County, according to the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office.
    The bodies were discovered after Gerry Wayne Geiger’s family called the sheriff’s office asking if officers could check on him because they had not heard from him for several days.

  • Rock Hill man wanted in pistol-whipping assault

    A York County man is wanted for assaulting a Lancaster resident with a pistol last weekend.
    Officers are searching for Frederick Vidal Ross, 38, 1654 Nicholson Ave., Rock Hill, in connection with the pistol whipping and robbery of a 14th Street man late Sunday night.
    Detectives with the Lancaster Police Department issued warrants on Ross for armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

  • Board of Zoning Appeals meeting canceled

    A county Board of Zoning Appeals meeting planned for Thursday night has been canceled.

    In an email sent Thursday afternoon to the Lancaster County Planning Department and The Lancaster News, among others, representatives from Griffin Brothers Enterprises withdrew their application to expand the existing Mining Road Landfill. A public hearing had been set for the meeting to allow for comments on the expansion to include a Class 3 solid waste landfill.
