  • New Roy Hardin Park almost ready for public

    After more than a year of development and months of construction work, the new Roy Hardin Park is almost complete.
    The relocated Indian Land park, which moved from its original 9.9 acres near Collins Road to 10.92 acres of property on Shelley Mullis Road, is close to opening for the public.
    Brian Rollar, director of development with Charlotte-based York Development Group, which has been working on moving the park, said crews were putting the finishing touches on the park last week.

  • Church to host Thanksgiving dinner

    If you’re in need of a meal on Thanksgiving, there’s at least one place for you to go.
    Freedom Freewill Baptist Church is hosting a Thanksgiving dinner at its sanctuary from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
    It’s open to anybody hard hit by the economy and who may not be able to provide a meal for themselves, said the Rev. Mitch Ingram, pastor at the church.

  • 30th annual B&B Craft Show is Saturday in Lancaster

    The annual B&B Craft Show will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Springdale Recreation Center, 260 S. Plantation Road.  
    This will be 30th show, traditionally held the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Its sponsor is Landmark Pentecostal Holiness Church.
    As in the past, there will be an assortment of items to pick from.
    Vendors will display and sell crafts, gifts, jewelry, pottery and art.  Food items will also be available at the show.
    Pictures with Santa will be made from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Man dies, wife hurt in kayak mishap

    A Kershaw man died after falling out of his kayak in a pond near Great Falls on Sunday.
    Clarence Marshall Jr., 65, and his wife, Brenda, also 65, were kayaking on Stumpy Pond when both of their kayaks capsized, said Lancaster County Deputy Coroner Karla Knight Deese. Stumpy Pond is located in the Cedar Creek Reservoir along the Catawba River, between Great Falls and Lancaster.

  • Woman sentenced for check forgeries

    Brenda Coates will spend the next five years in prison. And when she gets out, she’ll have to pay back the $189,000 she took from an area church.
    Coates, 47, of 223 Youngs Bend Road, Kershaw, (her last-known address) received a five-year prison sentence Friday morning after she pleaded guilty in general sessions court to 64 counts of forgery.

  • Two stores robbed on Friday

    Authorities are investigating two armed robberies that occurred Friday – one in the morning and the other at night.  
    Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call shortly after 8:30 a.m. about an armed robbery at Discount Beverage on Great Falls Highway.
    Two men – one armed with a knife – entered the store and demanded money from the cashier, Sheriff Barry Faile said.
    The cashier, a woman, gave the men an undisclosed amount of money. The men then fled the store on foot, Faile said.

  • Man gets 17 years for 2009 home invasion

    A Monroe man received 17 years in prison Friday after pleading guilty on four charges that stemmed from an August 2009 home invasion in the Tradesville community.
    Jacob Hughes, 19, of 4114 Stack Road, Monroe, pleaded guilty in general sessions court to charges of first-degree burglary, kidnapping, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
    He was sentenced to 17 years in prison for each of the first three charges and five years for the firearm possession charge.

  • Lancaster teen charged with attempted murder

    A Lancaster teen has been jailed in a Nov. 13 shooting outside a Sumter Street home.
    The Lancaster Police Department charged Jonathan David Rivera, 18, of 1715 Old Lynwood Drive, late Tuesday with attempted murder. He’s accused of shooting at an occupied vehicle that was parked outside the house the night of Nov. 13.
    Rivera has also been charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

  • Ministerial Alliance hopes to make a positive impact

    One of the primary purposes of the Lancaster County Ministerial Alliance is to help young people by taking or supporting positive action to address problems in the community.
    “The way to the root of the problem is to provide solutions,” said the Rev. Eddie McIlwain, president of the organization.
    McIlwain said it was erroneously reported that some ministers present at a recent public meeting were members of the alliance.

  • Girl Scouts give thanks to seniors

    Giving thanks. That’s what Thanksgiving is all about.  
    But there are many ways to give thanks – with time, energy and love.  
    Four local Girl Scout troops gave thanks to some Lancaster County seniors by creating autumn centerpieces for the Thanksgiving dinner tables at the Lancaster County Council on Aging.
    Misty Carpenter and Cheryl McAteer work closely with the local Girl Scout troops.
