    Mandy Catoe has joined The Lancaster News as a general assignment reporter and photographer. She covers the county and education beats.  
    Mandy has lived in Lancaster since 2005 and has a varied background in human services, organic farming, sports and music festivals and is a registered yoga teacher.
    She graduated magna cum laude from Winthrop and has worked as a freelance writer and photographer throughout her life.

    The Lancaster County Fire Rescue’s “Is There Fire in You?” campaign got an unexpected boost this month from the governor’s office.
    On April 1, Gov. Nikki Haley announced revised guidelines for those who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, what were once known as food stamps.

    Using a $1 million federal grant, Lancaster County is launching a massive multimedia campaign to address its alarming shortage of volunteer firefighters.
    Dubbed “Is There Fire in You?” the Lancaster County Fire Rescue campaign launches April 22 on social media, the Internet (www.JOINLCFR.org), television, radio, print media and signs.

  • Biologist to discuss protecting local species

    Morgan Wolf knows parts of Lancaster County that few of us see – quiet, clear creeks where American eels, tri-colored bats and brook floaters grow, and plant pockets where pool sprite and black-spored quillwort thrive.
    As a state biologist for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service office in Charleston, she has the task of making sure those ecologically sensitive habitats – the homes of wildlife and plants listed as at-risk, threatened or endangered – remain protected.

  • Single-vehicle wreck kills Lancaster man

    A Lancaster man has died from multiple injuries received in a single-vehicle accident last week.
    Wilbert Lloyd, 79, of 4514 Rowell Road, died Thursday, April 7, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he was flown after the wreck on S.C. 903 near Bob White Road on April 5, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

  • Lancaster, Great Falls men drown in pond

    GREAT FALLS – Two men from Lancaster and Great Falls drowned last week when their fishing boat sank in a Fairfield County pond.
    Fairfield County Coroner Barkley Ramsey said Daniel Vonni Adams, 29, of 1528 Pinewood Ave., Lancaster, and Freddie Boulware, 25, of 617 Chester Ave., Great Falls, died in a private pond behind 289 Nickey Road near the Chester/Fairfield County line Wednesday, April 6.
    Ramsey said a call came in at 12:01 p.m. that a boat had capsized, and the survivor did not see the other people. The survivor, Ramsey said, was Adams’ brother.

  • Deputies, troopers honored for high DUI arrest counts

    Two Lancaster County deputies and 12 state troopers assigned to the S.C. Highway Patrol post in Lancaster and Chesterfield counties have been honored for their push to get drunk drivers off the road.
    They were recognized last week during the S.C. Department of Public Safety’s 11th Annual DUI Recognition in Columbia.
    SCDPS Director Leroy Smith credited the officers for their 2015 efforts to decrease the number of driving under the influence incidents on state roadways.

  • DSS workers crammed into closets

    Overcrowding has turned storage closets into offices at the Lancaster County Department of Social Services, and some offices designed for one case worker now hold four.
    Behind the building, four large portable storage units hold what used to fill the storage closets, and still the DSS hallways are lined with stacks of office supplies and equipment.

  • 4th man charged in IL murder

    A Van Wyck man arrested in Indian Land is the fourth to face murder charges in the April 5 death of 20-year-old Randy Tran of Fort Mill.
    Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office investigators, deputies and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents arrested Na’Chon Jakeh Hayden, 22, of 4668 Tam Lane, about 6:30 a.m. Monday, April 11, at a home on Mountain Ridge Court in Indian Land.
