In 1930, at age 14, Alma Pate’s home was 208 W. Gay Street, the historic Lancaster County Jail.
But it wasn’t because she was a prisoner. Her father, David Belk, was the jailer and the family lived in the jail.
Pate, 98, said she was born in the Unity community of Lancaster and moved to town when she was 12. She was a young teenager when she began living at the county jail, she said.
