  • Authorities search for serial Aldi shoplifter

    The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is seeking  the public’s help in identifying a serial shoplifter at the Aldi grocery store on Charlotte Highway (U.S. 521) in Indian Land.
    In a press release issued Friday, Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Matt Shaw said a man caught on surveillance video shoplifting at the grocery store is believed to have been involved in multiple incidents there.
    The most recent, Shaw said, was June 4 when the man reportedly stole meat valued at $293 from the store.

    Will Shetley admits he wasn’t too excited about taking part in this year’s Salkehatchie Summer Service program.
    The 14-year-old from Union said his mother and grandfather years ago participated in  Salkehathchie, which recruits teens throughout the state to make home repairs for residents who aren’t able to afford the work.

  • City Council approves Erwin Farm pump station contract

    The city of Lancaster is moving ahead with plans to upgrade one if its pump stations.
    City Council voted unanimously Tuesday, June 11, to approve a contract with W.K. Dickson for engineering services.
    The company will provide planning and project management for the pump station-improvement project in the Erwin Farm area.
    This is one of the city’s 17 pump (or lift) stations, which help move wastewater through areas where slopes and elevations won’t allow it to flow naturally.

  • Woman attacked through window

    A Kershaw woman called 911 after a man she knew allegedly broke her bedroom window and grabbed her by the hair.
    Deputies responded to the vandalism and assault call about 2:30 a.m. June 9 in the 6100 block of Old Lancaster Highway in Kershaw, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
    Deputies spoke with the woman at the scene who said the assault happened shortly after she returned home from watching a race in Lancaster and had put her child to bed.

  • Woman points gun at driver

    An altercation between two women reportedly led to one pointing a gun at the other while driving along Rock Street.
    A Lancaster woman who was visibly upset came to the Municipal Justice Center on East Arch Street about 6:45 p.m. June 5 to report somebody pointing a pistol at her, according to a Lancaster Police Department incident report.
    The woman said she was dropping somebody off at the corner of Rock Street and Chesterfield Avenue when a woman she knows pointed a black pistol at her car  from the passenger side of a white Kia four-door, the report said.

    From 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, York Technical College, 452 S. Anderson Road in Rock Hill will host Connect YTC: Enrollment Day 2013, said Michael McAllister, the college’s marketing coordinator for college advancement.

  • VA seeks info on Korean War vets

    Calling all Korean War veterans: a local effort is underway to find any and all surviving veterans for special recognition in this, the 60th anniversary of the end of the three-year war in 1953.
    The Lancaster County Veterans Affairs Office is trying to collect and identify names and addresses of all Korean War veterans here to be recognized July 15 during a patriotic service at the Columbia Convention Center.

  • KCI workers arrested for sexual misconduct

    KERSHAW – After a months-long probe into possible sexual misconduct at Kershaw Correctional Institution (KCI), three female employees turned themselves into authorities and were arrested late last month. 

    Crystal C. Haynes, 56, of Lancaster, and Charthenia B. Smith, 55, of Heath Springs, were each charged with first-degree sexual misconduct with an inmate of a correctional facility.

  • City Council adopts $23.39 million budget

    After weeks of talk about taxes, fees and funding for special projects, there was virtually no budget discussion at City Council’s most recent meeting Tuesday, June 11.

    That night, council voted unanimously on final reading to adopt the city’s budget for 2013-14, which is set at $23.39 million. The vote came in a smooth, expeditious fashion, as there wasn’t any debate among council members or city staff.

  • Developer seeks change in zoning for TreeTops property

    VAN WYCK – A new residential development is being proposed on Van Wyck Road at the former site of the TreeTops children’s camp, where Mattamy Homes wants to build up to 1,200 homes.

    The Canadian homebuilder has filed two applications with the Lancaster County Planning Commission, the first asking for the rezoning of the 622-acre property at 9070 Van Wyck Road and the second for the allowance of cluster subdivisions for the entire county.
