  • Sheriff’s office to get new home

    As part of a $2.5 million plan, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office will soon have a new home.
    The sheriff’s office, which is running out of room at its Pageland Highway building and needs to comply with a new state requirement for evidence storage, will move its personnel to the five-building Thaxton complex on S.C. 9 within the next year.
    The plans were announced Tuesday night as County Council unanimously approved the purchase of the property.

  • Council honors firefighters at meeting

    One by one they filed to the front of the room as the large crowd burst into applause.
    The long line of men, mostly chiefs decked out in their best dress uniforms, represented the county’s 19 fire departments in a special ceremony by County Council on Tuesday night.
    After the county hosted the S.C. Fire Chiefs Association conference in October at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster, as well as recent coverage of each fire department in The Lancaster News, council wanted to recognize the volunteers for all they do.

  • County OKs funds for farmers market

    After a surge of interest in the newly reorganized farmer’s market, the county has given the organization additional funding.
    County Council is providing an additional $3,000 for the farmers market. The money will be used to buy new furniture and for various renovations at the market.
    Councilman Jack Estridge said this is the time to address the needs of the vendors and the community.

  • Who will seek District 16 seat?

    Now that Mick Mulvaney of Indian Land will be going to Congress, who will take his place in the state Senate?
    Mulvaney, a Republican, defeated 14-term incumbent U.S. Rep. John Spratt, a Democrat from York, to win the 5th District congressional seat in Tuesday’s midterm election. Mulvaney is halfway through his term as the District 16 representative in the state Senate.
    Several names have surfaced as possible successors to Mulvaney in the District 16 seat, though no one has yet made a commitment to run.

  • Hood, Howard thankful for re-election

    Lancaster City Councilman Kenny Hood said voters picked the better candidate in the District 1 race.
    Hood, who represents that district, defeated challenger Anthony Elder by 58 percentage points Tuesday night.
    Hood got 262 votes (79 percent) compared to Elder’s 70 votes (21 percent).
    The Lancaster County Election Commission certified the results Friday.
    “The best candidate won,” Hood said. “The work I’ve done speaks for itself.”

  • Mulvaney going to Congress

    About 15 minutes after becoming the first Republican from Lancaster County to win the 5th Congressional District seat in more than 100 years, Mick Mulvaney appeared overwhelmed.
    Surrounded by his wife, Pam, and members of his campaign team, Mulvaney, the state senator for District 16, thanked a crowd of supporters at the Bradley Arts and Sciences Building at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster for his win over Democratic incumbent John Spratt, who has held the seat since 1983.

  • Mulvaney first local resident to hold seat since 1957

    Mick Mulvaney made history Tuesday night as he became the first Lancaster County resident to return to the state’s 5th Congressional district seat in more than 50 years.
    Mulvaney, the state senator for District 16, won the seat over Democratic incumbent John Spratt, who’s held the seat since January 1983.
    Mulvaney is the third Lancaster County resident to hold the seat.

  • Mulvaney supporters cheer results

    Hundreds of anxious Mick Mulvaney supporters waited for news about the 5th Congressional District race Tuesday night at the Bradley Arts and Sciences Building at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster.
    Soon after polls closed at 7 p.m., they were huddled around flat-screen televisions scattered around the room. Cheers, sighs or gasps would occasionally burst from the crowd as votes poured in and the news channels reported the tallies.

  • Shaw worked hard to win votes

    Joe Shaw said he worked harder this election than in any of his other campaigns for office.
    Shaw, who’s been Lancaster’s mayor for 28 years, won re-election to his eighth term in office on Tuesday. He said he looks forward to another four years of providing leadership and service to the city’s residents.
    The mayor received 1,419 of the votes (54 percent) Tuesday.
    City Councilwoman Linda Blackmon-Brace finished second with 924 votes (35 percent). Mary Helen Yarborough got 192 votes (7 percent) and Donnie Birchfield got 107 votes (4 percent).
