  • Soliant color on cruiser

    Lancaster-based Soliant is adding its own special paint film to a new police cruiser, the E7, which is being built by an Atlanta company.

     Soliant makes the film at its 100-employee plant on S.C. 9. It’s a special paint film that’s applied to auto components during the parts-molding process, which will help automakers cut costs and reduce solvent emissions during production.

    The films will be used extensively on Carbon Motors Corp.’s E7 vehicles, says John Cupstid, Soliant director of sales and marketing.

  • Merle Norman sponsors Most Kissable Lips contest

    Pucker up, women. If you believe your lips are irresistible, there’s a chance you could go home with a basket of goodies.

    The Merle Norman Cosmetics at 949 N. Main St. is having a Most Kissable Lips contest. It started Tuesday and runs through Valentine’s Day.

    Store owner Toni Hicks said Merle Norman is having the event at all its locations. Three winners will be chosen at the store and will each receive a gift basket containing more than $50 in store products.

  • Harris Teeter to open

    INDIAN LAND – Seven years after Harris Teeter left Lancaster County, a new location is opening in Indian Land.

    Harris Teeter will celebrate its grand opening March 18 at the Carolina Commons shopping center off U.S. 521 at Sun City Carolina Lakes. The 48,000-square-foot store, which is larger than average, will feature a pharmacy and a Starbucks coffee shop.

    Harris Teeter had a store in Lancaster for many years, but it closed in February 2002. The store, located at 409 W. Meeting St., shut its doors after almost 40 years  due to declining sales.

  • Awards honor business, two individuals

    A funeral home, an auctioneer and Lancaster civic leader were honored at the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting Thursday night.

    The chamber holds its annual meeting to honor the county’s Small Business of the Year, the chamber’s Volunteer of the Year and hand out a citizenship and service award.

    Live and silent auctions are also held to raise money for chamber programs.

    The chamber’s Small Business of the Year is Crawford Funeral Home. The award is sponsored by First Citizens Bank.

  • Business geared to setting up, prepping race cars for the track

    A new motor sports service has raced into Lancaster County.

    Performance Technologies, a company focused on race car preparation and set-up, officially opened Feb. 2, though it has been open since mid-January.

    Owner and race enthusiast Ron Read recently relocated from northern Virginia. The Charlotte area attracted him because of its close association with motor sports, particularly NASCAR.

  • Green helps children, families cope with behavior problems

    How many people can say that their favorite part of work is getting hugs?

    Not too many, but for Christine Green, a doctor at Morphis Pediatric Group Child and Adolescent Behavior Services, this is a regular part of her day.

    Green believes that there was a definite need for a practice such as this in Lancaster. She sees patients from all over the county and surrounding areas.

    The practice opened in October.

  • Kissable lips winner named

     A few dozen stationery note tabs with lip impressions decorated a poster at Merle Norman cosmetics.

    Each set of lips represented a customer who had tried her luck at the Most Kissable Lips contest, a promotional event the store held  to generate more interest and sales.

    The lips varied in size, width and shape as well as the shade of lipstick used.

    The three winners are April Faulkenberry, Lacey Lowery and Alison Plyler. Honorable mention went to Ann Lowery and Shelia Starnes.

  • For one day only, Murphy’s Express lowers and lowers its price

    Saturday afternoon on the S.C. 9 Bypass looked somewhat like a hurricane evacuation.

    Vehicles came to a dead stop as motorists waited in long lines to take advantage of a rare sale – gas for under $1.

    Murphy’s Express, a new gas station and convenience store next to Zaxby’s, held its grand opening Saturday, though the store opened last month.

    To celebrate the grand opening, at 11 a.m., it started selling regular gas at $1.49 a gallon.

    But to the surprise and benefit of many, that price fell throughout the day.

  • Student expresses herself with Bohemian flair

    On a trip to Key West several years ago, Morgan Overcash had an artistic epiphany.

    Overcash, 20, was gazing at storefronts while on vacation with her family in 2006 when a few pieces of furniture caught her eye. She stopped to examine a cluster of elaborately painted Adirondack patio chairs, called Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville chairs. A budding artist, Overcash was fascinated with the designs painted on the furniture and knew immediately she wanted to do something similar. That’s when her business, Bohemian Lily Designs, was born.
