  • Advertising staff wins 19 SCPA awards

    Advertising representatives at The Lancaster News brought home a slew of awards from the recent S.C. Press Association’s annual Palmy Awards.

    The awards ceremony was held May 15 at the Sheraton Hotel in Columbia. The Lancaster News won 19 awards, plus the prestigious Paul League Award for Best Overall Advertising in the weekly division. The Lancaster News competes in the 12,001 to 35,000 weekly circulation division.

  • Featured in Southern Living

    The sparks fly at Bob Doster’s metal-working shop in East Gay Street as a computerized torch cuts out the shape of a stainless-steel angel oak tree.

    Doster, 60, sketches out a design, then uses the torch to cut out the shape. The piece is then shined up and welded onto a base.

    That’s the process for the smaller pieces, such as the palmetto trees, Rocky Shoals spider lilies, angel oaks and various Christmas ornaments that Doster is known for.

  • Homecare/Hospice of Lancaster - same services but different structure

    Homecare of Lancaster and Hospice of Lancaster have undergone restructuring at the corporate level, but still provide the same quality service the community has come to expect, say staff members.

    For more than 25 years, Homecare and Hospice had been part of Springs Memorial Hospital, owned by Community Health Systems, based in Tennessee.

    But recently Community Health Systems reorganized and made its homecare and hospice entities free-standing organizations, said Stephanie Gardner, director at Homecare/Hospice of Lancaster.

    The change took effect Jan. 1.

  • CMC-Carolina Lakes Medical Plaza to open

    INDIAN LAND – Indian Land residents should have a plethora of options for their medical needs when a new medical center opens next month.

    The CMC-Carolina Lakes Medical Plaza is set to open May 5 at 7666 Charlotte Highway. It’s located a few miles south of Sun City Carolina Lakes and Carolina Commons Shopping Center.

    Kevin McCarthy, spokesman for Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, said the practices that will operate in the building include Barnett Family Practice, the Sanger Clinic/Charlotte Cardiology Associates and Mecklenburg Medical Group.

  • Two large home builders merge

    BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., and DALLAS – Pulte Homes and Centex Corp. announced last week a merger agreement under which Pulte and Centex will combine in a stock-for-stock transaction valued at $3.1 billion, including $1.8 billion of net debt.

    In 2008, Pulte and Centex delivered more than 39,000 closings with combined revenues of $11.6 billion. The combined company will have the strongest liquidity position among its peer group with more than $3.4 billion of cash as of March 31, 2009, a news release said.

  • Walgreens to open this summer

    INDIAN LAND – Indian Land residents will have another option for picking up prescription drugs and daily essentials when Walgreens pharmacy opens this summer.

    The 14,820-square foot store, located at Jim Wilson Road and Charlotte Highway, is slated to open in the next few months.

    Walgreens’ spokesman Robert Elfinger said construction on the building and work on the interior are almost complete, although there are too many variables, such as weather conditions and remaining site work, to say exactly when the store will open.

  • Springs Memorial upgrades its MRI; says patients will benefit

    Springs Memorial Hospital has updated the software of its MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) system to a high-definition and highly enhanced version.  

    The Signa EXCITE 1.5T HD system provides doctors at Springs Memorial with highly detailed pictures of anatomy and pathology to help them evaluate a wide range of conditions, including stroke, muscoskelatal and heart disease.

  • More produce stands on the way?

    Fresh fruits and vegetables may soon be available along local roads and highways, as a new produce stand initiative rolls out across the state

    As part of the S.C. Department of Agriculture’s S.C. Certified program, 200 farm product stands are planned for the 23 distressed and least-developed areas in the state.

    A county must meet two criteria established by the Department of Revenue to be considered distressed – a high unemployment rate and a low per-capita income.

  • Lowe’s coming to IL soon

    INDIAN LAND – Lancaster County residents will soon have a new place to buy hardware and supplies for their construction, home-improvement and gardening needs.

    Construction of a Lowe’s home-improvement store, near the intersection of U.S. 521 and S.C. 160, is progressing on schedule.

    The 103,000-square-foot store will have a 31,000-square-foot garden center, said company spokeswoman Karen Cobb. The $12 million investment will create 120 new jobs, the majority of which will be full-time.

  • Economy hits home at daycares

    Mark Burbee wasn’t sure how the declining economy would affect his daycare business. But despite Lancaster County’s high unemployment rate, he said he’s doing just fine.

    Burbee, owner of Burbee Early Care and Education Center in Lancaster, said enrollment leveled off for several months last year as the economy began to decline. The center normally holds a maximum of 125 children, but enrollment dropped to about 100.
