  • Nutramax wins big S.C. industry honor

    Nutramax Laboratories’ financial and philanthropic contributions to the community have earned it a top award from the S.C. Commerce Department.
    Nutramax was named the 2017 South Carolina Large Industry Impact Winner among the state’s 13 Tier Three counties. The Commerce Department honored the company May 11 in Columbia as part of the agency’s 26th-annual Industry Appreciation Event.
    Nutramax was selected because of its capital investment, job creation, community engagement, and commitment to the environment.  

  • Getting young adults prepped for entering local workforce

    While many young adults are planning for college in the fall, some of their peers will soon be actively seeking employment. To meet their needs, ResCare Workforce Services, along with partnering agencies, is planning two job recruitment and resource fairs.

    The first event will be held this Friday, May 12, from 2-4 p.m. at the Chester YMCA. The second event will be next Friday, May 19, from 2-4 p.m. at the Lancaster Adult Education building.

  • INSP real estate project might include a YMCA

    A 191-acre real estate project being undertaken by the owners of Inspiration Network (INSP) in Indian Land will feature commercial, retail, office and residential components, and developers are hoping to secure the area’s first YMCA. 

    The Upper Palmetto YMCA, serving York, Chester and Lancaster counties, said it’s “considering expansion into Lancaster County,” according to a release.

  • Ex-Gov. Hodges gets promoted to CEO of large lobbying firm

    Former Gov. Jim Hodges has been named president and CEO of one of the 20 largest lobbying and public affairs firms in the nation.

    The Lancaster native will take over daily operations of McGuireWoods Consulting on Jan. 12, 2018, the company announced Monday. McGuireWoods has offices in seven states, Washington, D.C., and Europe. 

  • Column: Using home equity as retirement income

    An article from Investment News highlighted a recent study from the National Council on Aging that measured the interest in and understanding of home-equity products among both older homeowners and financial advisers.

    The study revealed that as retirees age their retirement concerns increase due to rising medical costs and the fear of outliving their retirement savings.    

  • Springs Global bringing 20-30 jobs to county

    Springs Global US Inc., a company formed from the merger of Springs Industries and Coteminas, is bringing nearly 30 jobs to its Grace Avenue location by the end of April.

    The company will use the former Grace Logistics Center, 234 Grace Ave., built in the mid ‘90s, as a distribution center.

    The transition to S.C. comes after selling a Mississippi plant.

    The new Shrimp Boat at Buford Crossroads opened last week to an overwhelming response from patrons that left the owners and employees both astonished and bone tired.

    Much of the time, the parking lot was packed with a line of customers that snaked from the front door to the cash register for those wanting some of the best fried chicken around.

  • Mayor completes S.C. municipal training

    COLUMBIA – Lancaster Mayor John Howard recently completed the advanced component of the S.C. Municipal Elected Officials Institute.

    In order to graduate, Howard completed seven required courses, including two daylong sessions in conjunction with the Municipal Association of South Carolina’s annual Hometown Legislative Action Day.

  • Walmart workers wash feet, give kids new shoes, socks

    North Elementary students smiled Tuesday morning as they skipped to wash stations, where employees from the Walmart Distribution Center were waiting to wash their feet and give them new shoes and socks.

    Samaritan’s Feet, a nonprofit that has provided shoes to more than 6.5 million children around the world, brought its Shoes of Hope event to North’s gym Tuesday. The event was sponsored by Walmart Distribution of Pageland.
