  • Couple come out of retirement to start new business in IL

    INDIAN LAND – Frank and Judy Taillon retired just a few years ago to their dream home at Clearwater Beach,  Fla., to start a new life of leisure. But what seemed to be a dream come true soon developed into a change of plans.

    It started with a move to Indian Land to be closer to their best friends – Judy’s sister, Felicia, and her husband, Dana – and their new dream of starting a business together.

  • Silly Bandz are all the rage

    Breaking open the small plastic package, Kirsten Blackmon grabs the rubber bracelets inside and clips them to her belt.

    Blackmon, 11, has been on the hunt for the bracelets for months, checking out jewelry and specialty stores along with her 7-year-old sisters Alexa and Alysa. The fifth-grader found her latest additions at Maple Street Monograms in Lancaster, adding to her collection of more than 40 bracelets.

  • Shehane does “Sunday Bluegrass” on WAGL

    Because of the economy, now might not be the best time to start a new business venture, but that isn’t stopping Tony Shehane.

    Shehane has started an one-hour radio show, “Sunday Bluegrass” from 4 to 5 p.m. on WAGL (1560-AM). And Shehane, 69, isn’t intimidated by a risk of failure.

    “I figured Columbus took a chance on something, so why can’t I?” Shehane said. “It’s really no different. You don’t know if you can succeed if you don’t try.”

  • Time for you to vote in Best of the Best contest

    Fewer categories and a new logo are changes in The Lancaster News’ popular Best of the Best contest this year.

    The contest, in its 11th year, gives readers a chance to vote for their favorite local businesses and service providers.

    A new logo has been created for the contest, and the advertising department has slashed the number of categories by about half, said Katie Harrell, coordinator for the contest.

    “Some of them were repetitive, like medical specialist and medical facility, which we condensed into medical specialist,” Harrell said.

  • ALDI set to open in January

    Construction continues on Lancaster County’s first ALDI grocery store, which is set to open shortly after the new year.

    In late 2008, news began to spread that the grocery chain was looking to locate in Lancaster. Since that time, site work at Old Charlotte Road and North Park Drive has begun and a structure has been erected – all in preparation for the Jan. 15 open date.

    Crews are on the scene daily landscaping the property and building at the store.

  • Rebate program begins March 31

    Area appliance retailers and contractors hope to see a surge in their businesses beginning March 31.

    That’s when consumers will be able to take part in a new state appliance rebate program.

    Through the program, residents who buy new Energy Star-certified refrigerators, dishwashers, water heaters, air conditioners and other appliances will be eligible for a $50 to $500 rebate.

    Energy Star is a federal certification program requiring energy-efficient appliances, which often save between 10 and 50 percent more water and electricity than standard appliances.

  • Conditions right to buy homes

    With the availability of low interest rates and federal tax credits, now is the time to buy a new home.

    That was the advice from Pat Riley, president and COO of Allen Tate Co., who spoke to about 100 people at the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce membership luncheon March 23 at the Lancaster Golf Club.

    Riley discussed national, regional and local housing market trends, as well as the future outlook for Lancaster and surrounding counties.

  • Intimidator equals tourism

    A new high-speed roller coaster could help boost the state’s economy, attracting tourists and creating several jobs, said Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer at an unveiling March 26.

    Bauer was one of several people to speak last week at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Carowinds’ newest roller coaster, the Dale Earnhardt-themed Intimidator. Carowinds is an amusement park located near I-77 on the border of North and South Carolina.

  • Jowers is on the road again

    Before Phil Jowers retired from Duracell in 2007, he opened Right Turn Driver Training.

    He hoped to retire from his full-time job at the plant, and then teach others the rules of the road during his retirement.

    In 2007, his plans changed.

    Jowers, 56, discovered that a disease he learned he had in 2004, non-alcoholic septic hepatitis, had progressed. The disease causes the scarring of the liver, known as cirrhosis. Doctors told him that he needed a liver transplant, or else he had six months to a year to live.

  • Cardiologists performing new procedure at Springs Memorial

    Two Lancaster cardiologists are up on the latest trend when it comes to heart catheterization.

    Drs. Taral Patel and Paul Slota of Carolina Heart Specialists, who are affiliated with Springs Memorial Hospital, are among the first cardiologists in the area to offer radial artery cardiac catheterization as a first option for patients.

    A cardiac catheterization typically involves inserting a small tube or sheath into a major artery, most commonly the femoral artery in the groin, and snaking a small catheter to the heart.
