  • James E. 'Pop' Hayes, 68

    GREAT FALLS – James E. "Pop" Hayes, 68, died Saturday, June 21, 2008.

    Born Feb. 13, 1940, in Chester County, he was the son of the late Melvin B. Hayes and Rosie L. Hayes. He was married to the late Peggy J. Brown Hayes. He was a Chester County retiree, having worked for the Chester County Sheriff's Department for a number of years and as a truck driver until his retirement. He attended the Chester County public schools and was a member of First Mount Zion Baptist Church.

  • Melvin George Hinson, 58

    LANCASTER – Melvin "Mel" George Hinson, 58, died Monday, June 23, 2008.

    Born March 20, 1950, he was the son of the late Bruce and Mary Harris Hinson.

    He was a former employee of The Lancaster News and owner and publisher of The Lancaster Leader and Now Playing.

    Survivors include his daughter, Angela Hale and her husband, Matthew, of Chester; a son, Brad Hinson and his wife, Sheena G. Hinson, of Lancaster; a granddaughter, Aerin Hale of Chester; and three brothers, Leonard Hinson, Hurley Hinson and Charles Hinson.

  • Patricia 'Pat'' McManus, 63

    CAMDEN – Patricia Lane Presley McManus, 63, died Saturday, June 21, 2008.

    Born Jan. 9, 1945, in Monroe, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Bertha Preslar Presley. She was married to John C. McManus.

  • Pearl Nash Rorie, 89

    MARSHVILLE, N.C. - Pearl Nash Rorie, 89, died Monday, June 23, 2008.

    Born Nov. 15, 1918, in Union County, she was the daughter of the late Dwight D. and Martha Smith Nash. She was married to the late Preston Rorie and the late Horace Rorie.

    Survivors include two sons, Charles Rorie of Pageland and Cecil Rorie of Jefferson; a daughter, Joan R. Sneed of Lancaster; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by three brothers, Brice, Glenn and Banks Nash; two sisters, Zetta Griffin and Eva Plyler; and a grandson, Norris Sneed.

  • Robert Birdell Avant, 81

    LANCASTER – Robert Birdell Avant, 81, died Monday, June 23, 2008.

    Born Dec. 5, 1926, he was the son of the late Brewster Birdell and Isilta Belle Cribb Avant. He was married to the late Ruby Dixon Avant. He was retired from Springs Industries and was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon and musician. He was a lifetime Mason, having been a member of Hart Lodge, now known as Jackson Lodge No. 53.

  • Margaret Morris Steele, 79

    WAXHAW – Margaret Morris Steel, 79, died Monday, June 23, 2008.

    Born July, 9, 1928, in Lancaster County, she was the daughter of the late Eustace and Eva Mae Funderburk Morris. She was a Springs Industries retiree. She was married to John Orion "J.O." Steele Sr.

    Survivors include her husband; two sons, John O. Steele Jr. of Waxhaw and David Michael Steele of Indian Land; a daughter, Patricia Henry of Monroe; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren .

  • Elbert Herman Jackson, 85

    LANCASTER – Elbert Herman Jackson, 85, died Saturday, June 21, 2008.

    Born June 29, 1922, in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Samuel Boyd and Hester Lee Haywood Jackson. He was married to the late Elizabeth "Betty" Pierce Jackson. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a U.S. Postal Service employee, a Mason and a Shriner.

  • Anthony Wayne Graves, 61

    Anthony Wayne Graves, 61, died Friday, June 20, 2008.

    Born May 27, 1947, in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Samuel Major and Pauline Keye Graves. He was married to Carol Taylor Graves. He was a retired machinist and a veteran of both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy, having served in Vietnam.

    Survivors include his wife; and a daughter, Karen Graves of Lancaster.

    He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Graves; a brother, James "Jimmy" Graves; and a sister, Sylvia Crook.

  • Azilee Melton Taylor, 85

    JEFFERSON – Azilee Melton Taylor, 85, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008.

    Born Aug. 23, 1922, in Jefferson, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Pinky Robertson Melton. She was married to the late Edward Taylor. She was a retired Caro-Knit employee and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

    CHARLESTON – Judy Elliott Threatt, 58, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008.

    Born Dec. 3, 1949, in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Leroy Elliott and Emily Mackey Elliott. She was married to the late Bruce Wayne Threatt Sr. She was a member of Taylor's Grove Baptist Church and was retired from Springs Industries.
