Investigators are warning residents this week about a scam designed to scare people into handing over money to a stranger on the phone.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office received its first report about the scam on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from a woman who said she received a call from an unknown man about 1 p.m. that day, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

The woman said her caller ID showed the number as (866) 852-0766, originating from Manning.
