  • Anna Vanessa Sellers and Christopher Thomas Hicks were married Sept. 29, 2012, by the Rev. Maxie A. Threatt, uncle of the bride, at Plantation Farms in Byron, Ga.
    The bride is the daughter of Mark Sellers of Byron and Alona Sellers of Warner Robins, Ga. She is the granddaughter of Howard and Sybil Threatt Sellers of Lancaster. She is a 2007 graduate of Northside High School in Warner Robins and a 2012 graduate of Valdosta State University with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. She works as an educator in Lowndes County, Ga.

  • Richard and Alina Fernandez of Hialeah, Fla., announce the engagement of their daughter, Michelle Fernandez of Matthews, N.C., to Jamie Starnes of Charlotte, N.C.
    The wedding is planned for 5 p.m. March 30, 2013, at the Victorian Crow’s Nest in Monroe, N.C.
    Miss Fernandez is the granddaughter of Ricardo and Berta Cordova of Hialeah.
    She is a graduate of Barbara Goleman High School in Hialeah and Florida International University. \She teaches English at Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte.

  • Roger Absher of Fredericksburg, Va., and Kimbrali Harrell of Stantonsburg, N.C.,  announce the engagment of their daughter, Bethany Absher, to Lonnie Laney, both of Lancaster.
    The wedding is planned for 1 p.m. March 24, 2013, at Coker Ranch in Lancaster.
    Miss Absher is the granddaughter of Gerald and Nancy Absher.
    She is a 2007 graduate of Riverbend High School and works as a beauty adviser.
    Mr. Laney is the son of James Laney and Debbie Ellis, both of Lancaster.
    He attended Lancaster High School and works in the remodeling industry.

  • Mark and Lynda Caskey announce the engagement of their daughter, Marla Lynette Caskey, all of Lancaster, to Steven Andrew Musselwhite of Hartsville.
    The wedding is planned for 2 p.m. June 15, 2013, at First ARP Church in Lancaster.
    Miss Caskey is the granddaughter of Clyde and Faye Caskey of Lancaster and Gene and Helen Jordan of Edgemoor. She is a 2009 graduate of the S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics. She will graduate in May from Clemson University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

  • Following Valentine’s Day and the shelves piled high with those heart-shaped boxes of candy, I have been thinking about the pleasure cacao trees have given the world.

    The fruit of the cacao tree are large football-shaped pods, each containing up to100 seeds. Cacao seeds are the basis of all chocolate. The seeds, or beans, are very bitter, but the pulp that surrounds them is sweet and when it is allowed to ferment, the bitterness of the beans is reduced and they develop a heady chocolaty aroma.

  • Back in 1999 when Michael Burgess first began working at Hartley Funeral Home, little did he know one day he would end up owning and operating the business.

    With a degree in Sports Administration from Limestone College, he worked in his field of study for about a year before his uncle Jerry Hartley offered him a chance to learn the funeral business. He accepted the job and spent most of his time maintaining the landscaping of the funeral home while learning firsthand about the business.

  • GREAT FALLS  – Willie Locke Bell was at a movie theater in Lancaster when her boyfriend, Derry Tidwell, and his cousin came to the theater for Tidwell to sweep her off her feet.

    Tidwell purposed to find the young girl he wanted to make his wife.

    He was successful in his Saturday, July 11, 1934, endeavor.

    Bell, then 17, and Tidwell had been romancing one another for a while.

    They didn’t get to date but they’d write love letters to express their intimate feelings.

  • Clyde and Carol Thompson announce the engagement of their daughter, Brandi N. Thompson, all of Rock Hill, to Rufus T. Blackmon Jr. of Lancaster.
    The wedding is planned for 4 p.m. April 20, 2013, at 1214 Flint Hill Street in Rock Hill.

  • Douglas and Lisa Poston announce the engagement of their daughter, Breanna Poston, to Roger Hinson Jr., all of Lancaster.
    The wedding is planned for 2 p.m. March 30, 2013.
    Miss Poston is the granddaughter of Billy Ray and Sarah Jenkins of Lancaster.
    She is a 2010 graduate of Buford High School and earned a degree in medical assisting in 2012.
    Mr. Hinson is the son of Roger and Denise Hinson of Lancaster. He is the grandson of Ann Ingram, Aline Lane, both of Lancaster, and Joe Adams of Iowa.

  • Debbie Khoury of Lancaster and Edward Khoury Jr. of Myrtle Beach announce the engagement of their daughter, Jennifer Khoury, to Drew Pope, both of Lancaster.
    The wedding is planned for 3 p.m. Sept. 7, 2013, at Morning Glory Farms in Monroe, N.C.
    Miss Khoury is the granddaughter of Barbara and Edward Khoury Sr., Mary Ellen Ackerman, all of Lancaster, and the late Jimmie Ackerman. She is a 2006 graduate of Lancaster High School and a 2010 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in public relations. She works for SOI as a benefits specialist.
