  • Calvin Pierce and Mickey Sharpton Miller of Lancaster celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on March 10, 2013.
    They were honored by Covenant Baptist Church where Pastor Bert Welch proclaimed that day as “Mickey and Calvin Miller Day” and presented them with a plaque in recognition of their leadership and support of the church since its founding in 1994.
    The JOY Sunday School class hosted a luncheon after the worship service in their honor.

  • Harold and Terry DeWitt of Estill announce the engagement of their daughter, Amy Claire DeWitt, to John Joseph McArdle.
    The wedding is scheduled for 3 p.m. May 18, 2013, at Rutledge Chapel at the University of South Carolina.

    The bride is the daughter of Debbie Gillig of White Pine, Tenn. She is the granddaughter of Betty Mizell of Harleyville.
    The groom is the son of Becky Phillips of Lancaster.
    The bride was given in marriage by her son, Bailey, and her daughter, Genna.
    Music was provided by Jeff Catoe.
    A reception was held at Charley’s Café in Lancaster.

  • Alicia Amanda Morgan and Jeffrey Joseph Smith Jr. were married Nov. 17, 2012, by Terrence Neil Gordon at Secrets Resort and Spa in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
    The bride is the daughter of Sue Morgan of Heath Springs and the late Keith Morgan. She is the granddaughter of Smith Morgan and Mary Morgan, both of Kershaw, and the late Stanley and Peggy Marshall. She is a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School and of the University of South Carolina. She is the marketing/communications coordinator for the Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce.

    Rabies clinic
    Faulkner Animal Hospital will host a rabies clinic at several locations from 6 to 8 p.m. The clinic will offer rabies shots ($5), distemper/parvo shot ($16), bordetella or kennel cough ($16) each for dogs, and 4-way feline distemper ($16), FIV-feline ($16) and FELV-feline ($16) each for cats.     Benefit for Rick

    A benefit motorcycle ride for Rick Plyler will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 13, at Buford Sports Cafe, 1423 N. Rocky River Road. The cost is $25 for double riders and $15 for a single. Best hand wins $200 and worst hand wins $50. Stops include Frog’s, Big Daddy’s, Cousey’s and Buford Sports Cafe. Rain date is April 20. Proceeds benefit expenses for eye surgery to prevent blindness.   • For the third year in a row the saucer magnolia in our backyard lost hundreds of ready-to-open blooms to sudden below-freezing night temperatures.

    According to Steve Bender writing in “Southern Living,” this is a situation that regularly occurs about two springs in three. Still, it is very disheartening to see the lovely waxy buds that are pinkish-purple outside and white inside turn an unlovely brown. The poor tree will keep trying to replace the frozen blooms for months.

    According to a study by researchers at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh, people who live near trees and parks have lower levels of stress hormones and improved concentration. The study appeared this month in The British Journal of Sports Medicine.
