  • Great food is the centerpiece of any holiday celebration, and practicing safe food handling in the kitchen is an important part of holiday meal preparation. There are certain steps you can take to keep friends and family safe from food poisoning.

“The kitchen can be chaotic and it can be challenging to keep food safety top of mind when dealing with a whole holiday meal, from turkey to trimmings,” cautions Shelley Feist, Executive Director of the non-profit Partnership for Food Safety Education.

  • MILWAUKEE, WI – This holiday season, TOPS Club, Inc. The Sun City Carolina Lakes Pickleball Club made October a month of fun events devoted to raising funds to benefit an organization called Hope for the Warriors.

The club was supported by the entire community in its efforts, which included races, a 24-hour marathon, silent auction, Wall of Honor and a grand tournament.

The club wanted to exceed last year’s goal and, in doing so, managed to exceed the $10,000 goal it set for this year.

  • If you love fresh eggs, read on.

The 2012 4-H pullet sale is this Saturday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. at Chester County Farmer’s Market, 116 Columbia St., Chester. Eggs don’t come much fresher than getting them straight from the chicken.

  • We love the bundt.

Sometimes called a fluted tube pan, these fancy baking dishes dress up any cake.

This yummy Pumpkin Bundt Cake is from home cook Candy Ayers of Minneapolis.

It is as pretty as a picture and as easy as pie.

Spiced with pumpkin pie flavoring, canned pumpkin and butterscotch pudding, it’s a cake we bet you you’ll find any excuse to bake.

  • The Fort Lawn Community Center has a new executive director who is plunging head first into projects that will make the center a place of productivity and pride for the entire town.

Libby Sweatt-Lambert, on the job since Sept. 18, has literally endured whirlwind on the job training for the past month because she said she wants the community center to truly benefit the community.

“Our goal is to find out what the community wants so we can provide it here,” Sweatt-Lambert said.

  • Imagine what it would have been like in Lancaster when the main means of travel were walking or horses and buggies.

Elizabeth “Teeny” Kerr, now age 93, remembers those days.

Kerr is one of Lancaster’s special seniors who experienced those days and all the changes in between that bring us to today. She is also unique in that she actually attended all three First Presbyterian Church locations in Lancaster – from the historic church on Gay Street, to its more modern home on North Main Street.

  • Lancaster folks were a bit antsy the last week of October 1940.
All of this war stuff was taking a toll.

James Williams of Route 4 and Henry Flynn of Elm Street were among the first soldiers whose draft numbers were drawn from a fish bowl in Washington, D.C., that week.

It had been a tough week. Friday night’s weather had messed up the football game between Lancaster and Fort Mill.

The game ended in a 7-7 tie. Some didn’t go ’cause of the rain and the ones who went were mad about the outcome.
