USCL’s Rotaract Club held a meeting recently at a newly constructed picnic shelter on the grounds of the University of South Carolina Lancaster, behind the Gregory Health and Wellness Center.

The shelter was the result of a great deal of community effort, said Professor Robert Collins, instructor of Economics at USCL.

The 2012  Sun City Volunteers and Helping Hands drive for Safe Passage was a big success.

Susan McClure, who served as event co-chair with Jackie Sharp, said more than $700 in checks, cash and gift cards were collected, along with 158 cellular phones and hundreds – if not thousands – of toiletry items.

“In fact, we have so many, I’m going to give some (toiletry items) to Lancaster Children’s Home and the men’s shelter in Charlotte,” McClure said.

On a late August morning while enjoying coffee beside our pond, we noticed a flurry of activity high in a slender tree near the water’s edge opposite our chairs. Binoculars revealed a large number of juvenile blue birds, red bellied woodpeckers and American goldfinches picnicking on the dark blue berry-like fruits of a Black Gum Tupelo.

Residents of Sun City Carolina Lakes recently joined thousands of neighborhoods across America in the 29th annual Neighborhood Night Out, held Aug. 7.

Community residents came together to enjoy the evening with Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile and the SWAT team, firefighters, EMS and Rescue Squad from Indian Land, the American Red Cross Disaster Response Unit and the Pink Tow Truck serving the Indian Land area.

S.C. House Rep. Deborah Long and S.C. Sen. Greg Gregory joined the community and visited with residents.
