  • Programs available for landowners

    U.S. Department of Agriculture
    April 6 is the deadline to apply for the Conservation Reserve Program from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency (FSA) and the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).  Late applications will not be accepted.
    The Conservation Reserve Program retires erodible row crop land by planting trees, grass or wildlife foods and the program also benefits pastureland in streamside areas.

  • Take A Hike!

    University of South Carolina Lancaster
    The public is invited to the official opening of the nature trail at the University of South Carolina Lancaster at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22. The trail is the result of the combined work of USCL, the Catawba Master Naturalist Association and Boy Scout Troop 71. The half-mile of gently sloping trail meanders through pine forests, bottom-land hardwoods, stream-side habitats and upland hardwoods with various plant and animal life.

  • MLK Memorial Peace Conference April 4

    The Martin Luther King Jr. Social Action Committee Inc. (MLK-SAC), Food Lion LLC and Citadel of Hope Christian Fellowship will present the ninth annual MLK Memorial Peace Conference at 2 p.m. April 4 at the Fairway Room at the Springs Golf Course, 1821 Springs Club Road.
    The celebration will mark the 44th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year’s theme is “Remaining Hopeful through the Storm.”

    Because of the tough economy – with rising gas and grocery prices – one local church has made it a mission to make meals more affordable for struggling families in the Lancaster area.
    New Horizon Community Church, in conjunction with food marketing company Supreme Sales and Marketing LLC of Braselton, Ga., has launched a new food box program offering groceries at a discount, as a helping hand for those in need.

  • Wildfires a major concern in South Carolina

    The statewide late winter/early spring wildfire season is still about a month away but the S.C. Forestry Commission has launched a safety campaign so those planning to burn can take the appropriate steps.

    The seasonal outlook for the next few months indicates an increasing potential for high wildfire activity for most of the Palmetto State.

    Although it may not seem like it due to recent rainfall, precipitation amounts for this portion of the Piedmont are already about 1.2 inches below normal.

    If you feel like pulling the covers back up or staying home today, don’t worry.

    You aren’t alone. Friday the 13th has a way of doing that. 

    According to research, as many as 25 percent of the population believe Friday the 13th is a day of calamity.

    The fear of Friday the 13th is known as paraskevidekatriphobia (“para-ska-vee-decka-tri-phobia”), which stems from the Greek words for fear, Friday and 13. Friday the 13th happens three times in 2012 – today, April 13 and July 13.

    That works out to an average of 117,260 visitors per day.
