  • Learn your risk of diabetes at USCL Diabetes Alert Day

    University of South Carolina Lancaster
University of South Carolina Lancaster Diabetes Education Clinic, Carolina Literacy Network and the Catawba Lions Club are sponsoring a health screening for Diabetes Alert Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 27 at the Carole Ray Dowling Center on Hubbard Drive.
In 2011, the American Diabetes Association encouraged Americans to Join the Millions challenge and more than 600,000 people took the diabetes risk test.

  • Loosen up the lawn

The secret of a beautiful lawn isn’t always found in a barrel of chemicals or a bag of expensive grass seed.
Sometimes, it’s found in a barrel-shaped roller with spikes on it that penetrate the ground or hollow cylinders that extract cores or plugs of soil.

  • February Yard of the Month

Just steps away from the busy hubbub of the Lancaster County Courthouse and County Administration buildings, Justice Java offers a quiet getaway.

With a name like Justice Java, you may assume all they offer is coffee. However, this quaint little cottage offers everything from a light lunch to a glass of wine to cap off your workday.

The zigzagged walkway with brick inserts is edged in nandinas in brilliant reds, along with evergreen topiaries trimmed in swirls or neatly rounded sections.

  • Beat the cold to the punch

Winter weather is always a “scratch-your-head-to-figure-it-out” riddle. After last year’s colder than normal temperatures, many expected more of the same in early 2012.

But right now, warmer-than-normal temperatures have some plants and trees already budding, which has area fruit growers on edge.

  • Kennedy quotes reflect LCCA mission

If you want to celebrate the tremendous lifetime accomplishments of highly acclaimed performance artists, one of the best programs to watch is the annual Kennedy Center Honors, which was televised Dec. 22.

The Kennedy Center Honors have been awarded annually since 1978 by the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

  • Homeplace for the holidays

Christmastime is always special at 618 Morris Road.

It’s the time of year when Harris and Marcene Plyler bring their Victorian-style home to life with boughs of holly and berries.

These natural decorations enhance both the Plyler home and yard.

Beth Craig of the Leaf and Petal Garden Club passes by the Plyler home often and especially enjoys seeing it during the Christmas holidays.

  • Maintaining poinsettias hard, but not impossible

With the holiday season now fading, those colorful poinsettias will be doing the same thing in the upcoming months.

The most popular Christmas plant in America, millions of poinsettias are given and received as gifts each year.

But is it possible to keep it alive and going until Christmas 2012?

According to the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service, poinsettias can be maintained if you’re up for a challenge.

  • The great debate

For some, the notion of buying Christmas gifts for pets is unthinkable – a yard dog is a yard dog, they say, worthy of an occasional sow’s ear (maybe). Cats find their own amusement, so why waste money?

But with 78.2 million pet dogs in the United States, according to a national pet survey, owned by 45 million American households and 86.4 million cats in 38 million homes, it’s no surprise many think otherwise.

  • November Yard of the Month

If you travel Charlotte Highway often, you’ve probably noticed the cute home with a parking area surrounded by a low brick wall just north of the city limits.

If you haven’t noticed the house, Woody and Linda Wilson’s landscaping most likely caught your eye.

Tidy sculpted beds filled with a variety of low maintenance shrubs and other perennials topped with freshly tossed pine straw surround the house. Fresh seasonal container gardens and quaint front porch rocking chairs paint an almost flawless image.

  • Family critical part of LCCA success

Family. We all belong to (at least) one.                       Our families can include the people we cherish and love the most.

According to broad definition, “family” means a group of people who are tied together through some common thread – whether it be biological, ancestry, living arrangements, common interest or love. Family, in my dictionary, has 11 distinct definitions.
