  • 200 volunteers help clean up Indian Land

    For a second year, the Indian Land community participated in the Great American Clean Up on April 28-29.
    More than 200 volunteers and several Adopt-a-Highway groups gave up their Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon to walk the roads of Indian Land, picking up litter.

    It’s important to eat at least five or six times a day to keep your energy levels high.
    The problem is, most folks who focus on healthy main meals eat unhealthy snacks in between.
    However,  good nutrition doesn’t work that way. Eliminating unhealthy snacks could be key for your own body transformation.
    Here are three “super fruit” snack alternatives to fuel your body and keep your metabolism churning:

  • Goodbye junk food

    It’s that time of year when we’re most vulnerable to a snack attack.
    Snacks should be quick, easy and portable. Snacks should provide a little burst of energy and a brief respite from the daily grind. Unfortunately, with all the options piled on the grocery store shelves, it can be difficult to figure out which snack foods are truly healthy.

  • Honey Graham Crackers

    Ingredients
    1 cup whole-wheat graham flour
    ¼ cup all-purpose flour
    1⁄3 cup light brown sugar
    ¾ teaspoon baking powder
    ½ teaspoon baking soda
    ½ teaspoon kosher salt
    1⁄8 teaspoon cinnamon
    5 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed and chilled
    ¼ cup local honey
    3 tablespoons whole milk
    ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
    Directions

  • Homemade Candy Bars

    Ingredients
    2 cups unsalted walnuts (or the nut of your choice)
    ½ cup flaxseed meal
    ½ cup shredded, unsweetened coconut
    ½ cup natural peanut butter (or the nut butter of your choice)
    ½ teaspoon salt
    ½ cup coconut oil
    1 tablespoon light agave nectar
    1 tablespoon vanilla extract
    1 cup dark chocolate chips

    Directions
    u Line an 8×8-inch baking pan with foil, set aside.

  • No Junk Food Granola Bars

    Ingredients
    1 cup old fashioned rolled oats
    ½ cup crispy rice cereal
    3 tablespoons oat flour (You can make your own by grinding old fashioned rolled oats in the food processor; measure after grinding)
    ¼ teaspoon salt
    ¼ teaspoon baking soda
    ½ cup coarsely chopped, unsalted almonds
    ½ teaspoon cinnamon
    2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted and slightly cooled
    3 tablespoons light agave nectar

  • Taylor receives U.S. Navy commendation

    U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Corey Taylor, a Lancaster native, was recently awarded the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for meritorious service while serving with Mine-Countermeasures Squadron 7, in Sasebo, Japan.
    A 1987 Indian Land High School graduate and 24-year service veteran, Taylor served as the squadron’s operations officer from August 2010 to February 2012.
    Squadron commander, U.S. Navy Capt. Dan W. Brune made the presentation in February.

    This Easter, why not spring into family gatherings with a smorgasbord of deliciously decadent cupcakes? So much goes in to making a memorable Easter feast – the yummy ham, creamy deviled eggs, all the savory sides – but at the end of the day, it’s always been the cheerful sweets that have caught my eye the most.  

  • Christian Services opens new location

    In an effort to provide more efficient service to people in the community, Christian Services recently opened a new food pantry on Lynwood Drive.
    The new facility, which takes the place of food pantry services offered at Christian Services’ location on White Street, opened Feb. 20. Operations manager Eric Kramer said high demand and limited space made a new location necessary to provide the best possible service for those who need the help the food pantry offers.
