    Four beautifully shot mini-films that bring to life our seventh president, Andrew Jackson, who was born and spent his youth in this area, and highlight the park that bears his name.

    The Friends of Andrew Jackson State Park held a grand film review July 12 to introduce the four mini-documentaries on the young Jackson and the Revolutionary War history of the Waxhaws area.

    An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but bananas were always what kept us kids coming back for more! Mom would buy them by the bunches to keep us in the yellow. In fact, I never saw a brown banana until I was an adult...because us kids would gobble them up as soon as she brought them home!

  • Disney's Aladdin Jr. comes to stage

    The Community Playhouse of Lancaster County is bringing “Aladdin Jr.” to stage July 19-22 with all the magic, mayhem and flying carpet rides as the popular Disney tale.
    Directed by Elaine Reese, “Aladdin Jr.” has an all-kid cast in a stage adaptation of the 1992 Disney film with the well-known songs, “A Whole New World” and “Friend Like Me.”

  • Raymond’s unusual clay pot

    When Zan Garris Raymond found out “Antiques Roadshow” was taping in Atlanta, Ga., she gathered several pieces from her collection of Catawba Indian pottery and set out with her husband for the series taping.
    “I’ve always been a fan of ‘Roadshow,’” Raymond said. “It was a fun experience. I had no clue if I’d be on TV.”

  • Lancaster girl seeks Miss S.C. crown

    PAGELAND – Every Thursday night in June the lights went up on Watermelon Idol, Pageland’s annual music competition. Present each night of the event was Emily Moody, 18, of Lancaster.
    Moody is the daughter of Melanie Vaughn and Fred Moody Jr. and began competing in pageants as a young girl, before taking time off.
    “At one point I was just like I don’t want to do this anymore, so I stopped and just restarted in the last year,” Moody said.

  • Book exchange shares love of the written word

    The Carolinas Literacy Network’s (CLN) goal is to provide the Lancaster community with different resources to promote literacy in all of its forms.
    One way it does that is with the Second Glance, Second Chance book exchange, a bookstore that lets readers come and select books to read and keep for free.
    The program started in November 2009, and has more than 9,000 books to choose from.
    From mystery to history, and biography to romance, there is something for everyone.

  • Erwin Elementary retirees get together for fun, fellowship

    Retired teachers and staff members from Erwin Elementary School met on Sunday, June 23, at the Wagon Wheel to reconnect, share memories, renew old friendships, catch up on each other’s lives, laugh and brag on grandchildren.
    Based on the response, It was decided to make this event an annual reunion.
    Many of these teachers helped open Erwin Elementary in 1975.
    The group represents more than 800 years combined years of teaching and guiding children in Lancaster County.

  • Nine generations baptized at church

    hen Marlow Harper Murdock was baptized at Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church on May 27, she continued a family tradition that dates back to the 1700s.
    Marlow, the 6-month-old daughter of Ryan and Karen French Murdock of Atlanta, followed in the footsteps of her mother, her grandmother, Catherine Potts French, and six more generations.
