    Lots of people enjoy cooking, but few people have their cooking become a community phenomenon that lasts for more than half a century.

    86-year-old Ruth McGriff has been cooking for others for at least 60 years, learning the skill when she was just a girl of 13. Now she celebrates becoming a first-time author with the release of “Ruth McGriff: Legacy of Blessings” cookbook.

  • Duke Energy gives to Lancaster Works

    The Duke Energy Foundation is continuing its support of the Lancaster Works program with a contribution of $75,725 to the workforce development initiative of Carolinas Literacy Network.
    Lancaster Works offers ongoing jobs-readiness training to help job seekers enhance their employability skills and get employed sooner.

  • Spring treats get lightened

    We were all pastels and florals at the recent Just A Pinch Blue Ribbon Showcase event. (More on that Decadent Dessert celebration on www.justapinch.com in an upcoming Notebook.) There were so many great discussions that sprung up during the event, but the single most asked question was how to make springtime-appropriate desserts that are also healthy.
    Well, I took that on as a fantastic challenge. That very same evening I began to go through www.justapinch.com and pulled some of the Test Kitchen’s favorite springtime eats.  

  • Cookbooks on a mission

    INDIAN LAND – Members of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Mission’s Women’s Group took charge of menu planning and preparation of food at the Sun City Carolina Lakes Cooking Fingers Club luncheon March 11. The club meets for lunch every two weeks.

    The women wanted to demonstrate how to make several recipes from their “Bon Appetit” cookbook in keeping with the theme, “It Isn’t Easy Being Green,” said Sandy Simmons, who handled cookbook sales at the event.

    A Pageland couple got a very happy birthday surprise on Tuesday, April 2, and Springs Memorial Hospital has a new event to add to their history books.

    Carl and Lagana Blakeney share the same birthday, April 2, and while that isn’t unusual, the birth of their daughter, Lacaria, on the same day, is.

  • Avoiding the treadmill cycle

    I was at a local gym the other day and noticed a sign on the wall. The sign read, “One hour of exercise is four percent of your day.”  

    That made me think; if we’re doing the exercise wrong, what percentage will we end up with? To gauge that from an efficient and exercise productivity stand point, I would say zero percent.

    INDIAN LAND – American hero Jonathan Alan Roberts returned home from the War on Terror in August 2005. But for Roberts, the real battle of his life had just begun, one he continues to fight every day of his life.  

    Roberts, who joined the U.S. Army in summer 2002 as a Special Forces candidate, was deployed to Iraq with the 18th Airborne Corps following school and training at Forts Benning and Bragg.

    A TV celebrity is coming to Great Falls as part of the Great Falls Rescue Squad’s 6th Annual Pro Rodeo.

    Si “Uncle Si” Robertson, who appears on A&E’s most-watched reality television series, “Duck Dynasty,”will be at the rodeo for a “meet and greet” session.

    Back for a third season, “Duck Dynasty” features a Louisiana bayou family – the Robertson family – living the American dream as they operate a thriving business while staying true to their family values and lifestyle.

  • Partnerships grow arts education

    The Partners in Education program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is designed to assist arts organizations such as as the Lancaster County Council of the Arts.

    Throughout the nation, these programs develop or expand educational partnerships with their local school systems and other community-building organizations; the primary purpose of which is to promote learning by teachers.
