    Opinions and advice on how to achieve good health or overcome health problems are a “dime-a-dozen” nearly everywhere.
    But it means a lot more to hear a personal story from someone you know, who’s succeeded in achieving better health.
    It’s even better if their program is simple, easy to understand and affordable.
    Konstantinos “Gus” Deligiannidis, owner of Gus’ Restaurants in Kershaw and Lancaster, has a story of his own journey to good health, and he’s doing something to share it.

    FORT LAWN – In 1996, third-generation farmers David and Jimmy Jordan were looking for a crop that could be watered and didn’t require very much rain.
    Their options were limited, given their location just north of Fort Lawn on S.C. 21. That was something the Jordan boys learned young, while watching their grandfather try to scratch out a cotton crop on the same ground.
    “We’d sit on the porch and watch thunderstorms come through and go around this place every single time, making our granddaddy so mad he could spit,” David Jordan said.

  • French toast is breakfast fit for royalty

    From the outside, French toast – bread soaked in an egg batter and cooked golden brown in a skillet or on a griddle – appears to be a hearty breakfast treat fit for a king.
    According to promotional literature by the International House of Pancakes (IHOP),  the first written mention of this delicacy dates to Henry V of England.
    However, nothing could be farther from the truth. It was created as a way to rescue stale bread so nothing went to waste.

    With family-packages and buying in bulk the norm, cooking for one or two people can be an exercise in futility.
    Most recipes are written for families of four or for six to eight people.
    That’s especially true of dinner recipes, said Joe Yonan, author of “Serve Yourself: Nightly Adventures in Cooking for One.”

  • Girl Scout cookies are as popular as ever

    This year, about 200 million boxes of Girl Scout cookies will be sold and eaten. 

    That includes the 200 boxes that graced our dining room table sold by Betty Jo. 

    The boxes come in and go out, then come in again and go out again. 

    The Lancaster area Girl Scouts are part of the 22-county Mountains to the Midlands Girl Scout Council. These enterprising young ladies hope to sell 143,000 cases of cookies.

  • Alzheimer's car show surpasses $2,000 goal

    White Oak Manor raised $2,896 for the S.C. Alzheimer’s Association during the Cruise-In for Alzheimer’s and Walk-a-thon on Oct. 17.
    Alison Graves, White Oak actiivities director, had made a pact that if supporters could raise $2,000 before 7 p.m., she would allow her head to be shaved.  
    By 6 p.m., supporters had raised a little more than $2,200.
    “So yes, I’m bald,” Graves said..

  • Former Miss S.C. to speak at National Day of Prayer luncheon

    The Lancaster faith community is encouraged to attend the Fifth Annual Lancaster Community Prayer Luncheon on May 1 at Covenant Baptist Church, 165 Craig Manor Road.

    This year’s keynote speaker is Kelly McCorkle Parkison, who served as Miss South Carolina 2002 and participated in the television reality show, “Amazing Race.” 

    In addition to McCorkle Parkison, the service will include prayers offered to God for our families, churches, our government leaders, military and civil servants and our nation said Dr. Bert Welch, Covenant senior pastor.
