  • Passing through one last time

    On occasion, I’m a little jealous of W.B. Evans. This is one of those times.

    When it comes to looking back, “Mr. Bill,” as we call him in the newsroom  doesn’t have to pick and choose when looking for what stands out. Choosing the top features stories of the year is hard.

    I went through 157 issues making a few notes and was stunned to recall the people, places, events and organizations that make a difference. 

    To cull the list to 10 was almost impossible.

  • Lost & Found

    When Beverly Dozier’s family went around the table to say what they were thankful for during Thursday’s Thanksgiving meal she didn’t hesitate.

    Dozier is thankful for her gently-used brown corduroy coat and how it’s taken on a new meaning in her life.

    Andrew Garris may not have been at the Columbia home of Dozier’s brother to hear her sentiments Thursday, but he is just as thankful for that coat.

  • Patient inspires doctor's walk of faith

    Most of the time, the doctor does the talking and the patient does the listening. Some physicians are even apprehensive about dropping their guard to pray with patients.

    However, that’s not the case for cancer specialist Dr. Kashyap Patel of Carolina Blood and Cancer Care, or at least not anymore. 

    Now, Patel, the vice chief of staff for Springs Memorial Hospital, does both.

  • Ira B. Jones III: A hero who proudly served

    My family moved to 307 White St., when I was about 2 years old. 

    We moved next door to the Joneses – Big Ira, Minnie Craig, Sis, Ira B. III (Sonny) and Susan. Only a gravel driveway separated our houses.

    Immediately, the Jones family became my family, too.

  • Seeing pink twice

    For Jan Hicks, the pink ribbon on her Springs Memorial Hospital employee badge isn’t a reminder that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

    As a registered nurse and case manager, Hicks doesn’t need a decal on her name tag to remember that. 

    Right now, many in the medical field are supporting men and women who have survived, or are battling breast cancer. 

    That comes with the territory for Hicks and her colleagues.

  • Tori Roberts unique birthday wish comes true

     

    KERSHAW – Before Tuesday’s volleyball game between Andrew Jackson High School and Central of Pageland is over, there is a chance that the Lady Vols’ Tori Roberts may be called on to serve. 

    It may be her 17th birthday, but she won’t let that cause a distraction. 

    Tori has the determination to succeed at everything she does. Just ask Pastor Pablo Tayupanda and his wife, Marcella.

    The jet-setting lifestyle came easy for J.T. Franklin. It’s no wonder he was smiling.

    His grin came from helping estimate, design and oversee the electrical components of facilities like the $143 million Mecklenburg County Courthouse with its 39 courtrooms, the $27 million Billy Graham Library and 44 hospitals from coast to coast.
