LAKE CITY, Fla. – Sixty-one years after being wounded in the Korean War, former Lancaster resident David Hinson was awarded the Purple Heart during a ceremony at the Veterans Medical Center in Lake City, Fla., on June 30.
Hinson was told the event was a pre-Fourth of July celebration. When he realized the true reason behind the gathering, it nearly knocked him off his feet.
“It kind of surprised me,” Hinson said. “I felt like fainting. I could hardly stand on my feet.”
