As a graduate of the Barr Street High School Class of 1969, I am proud to see the position The Lancaster News has taken in regards to Black History Month (formerly Black History Week.)
A few months ago a group of alumni from various classes, including myself, started a page on Facebook. It is called “Barr Street High.”
We felt there was a need to archive the history of Barr Street High School, the African-American community, churches, organizations and the accomplishments the African-American community has made in the lives of the great citizens of Lancaster County.
We are in need of pictures, movie films, articles and any information covering the history of Barr Street High School and the Lancaster County African-American community to post on this site. We would like to go as far back as possible.
This site will be used to show the accomplishments, challenges and impact of African-Americans in Lancaster County on a monthly basis, not just for Black History Month.
We are trying so hard to make this Facebook page very professional and respectful to the memory of Barr Street High and the African-American community.
We feel that many people in Lancaster might have old pictures and maybe even some old 8mm movie films of parades or other events covering Barr Street. Before it is too late we want to archive this information and restore all old pictures, films and other information so that one day people will be able to look back at the history of the school.
We will return all pictures and films to the owner after we have made copies.
