BUFORD – Buford High School two-way football starter Joseph Wright led the Jackets’ fall sports honorees Monday night in the school auditorium.

Wright, a four-year starter for the Jackets, was among a host of BHS standouts honored at the fall sports awards night.

“Joseph will be hard to replace,” BHS football coach Mike Wells said. “He’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around.”

Wright, an all-county pick, racked up 60 tackles, 45 assists to go with three tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery. He led the BHS defensive points with 176.

He along with senior teammate Qua Reid were named to the All-Conference III-A team which also included BHS players Matt Shannon and Britt Wells.

Reid, a Class A all-state pick, earned the team’s Best Defensive Back Award.

Shannon garnered the team’s Jacket Pride Award.

“He was a joy to coach,” BHS athletic director Sam Page said of Shannon. “He does all he can to help the team. He battled through a lot of injuries, but kept coming back.”

Wells, a junior linebacker who also saw action at quarterback, was selected the team’s Most Improved Player.

A trio of ace seniors were also honored.

Guard Bryant Sims, a veteran in the BHS offensive trenches, was named the Best Offensive Lineman. Senior defensive end Jesse James earned the Best Defensive Lineman Award and running back Brent McAteer reaped the Best Offensive Back Award. McAteer rushed for 683 yards, averaging 4.2 yards a carry, with nine touchdowns.

The Jackets went 5-6, falling to eventual Class A Div. I state champion Chesterfield High School in the Class A Upper State playoffs.

Wells also served as a North-South assistant coach in the annual North-South All-Star football game in Myrtle Beach last fall.
