This morning, when I looked into the barrel where we burn trash, it was still and lifeless.Just the morning before, it was pulsing with life, with the tiny heartbeats of five Carolina wren chicks.We discovered the nest by accident. My husband threw a notebook into the barrel one April evening and “Poof!” a wren burst out. Upon closer inspection, he found the characteristic, tunnel-like nest of a Carolina wren, with five pinkish eggs flecked with rust.
